It
was recently reported that a Filipino girl was shot and killed for teasing a
schoolmate after beating him at a video game. At the time of this writing, the
suspect has not been identified, and police are involved in an ongoing
investigation. It is sad that this kind of violence has to erupt at all, but as
an avid gamer, I also have to wonder what kind of repercussions will come of
this that will affect the game industry. Will the game be blamed, as has been
the precedent in the past? Perhaps not, and my hope is that a sympathetic press
will stick to the facts instead of jumping on the "games are evil"
bandwagon.
But let us not dwell on this sad story; let's instead dwell on Warcraft
III. It's been creating quite a buzz on a number of gaming forums. The
biggest complaint is that the computer AI is too tough. And it is... almost. A
friend of mine in Jersey and I have now successfully defeated six computer opponents.
That's right, the two of us versus six comps.
How? Well, the computer is predictable and it can be duped and
second-guessed. It's not easy, but it can be done. I have found that human
competition is much more difficult (or easier, of course) and far more rewarding
to defeat. So, if you're frustrated by the computer AI, leave it alone and go
find some humans to bash.
What's you opinion of the WC3 AI? Too tough or not?
Talk about it in the forum (unless you're already tired of the topic, in which case you can piss
off and just read the news). Thank you, come again.
It's about time. When everyone from Harry Potter to James Bond has had a game
made with them as the star, we can all finally get ready for the game we've
really been waiting for, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Last week,
3DO announced its plans to bring archangel Abaddon to the PC, PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube in an action/horror game. Comic book artist Simon Bisley has been
brought on board to aid in the development of a game that will be intense in
both "action and style."
You will have to save the Earth from demons, cultists, religious zealots, and
a host of other nasties as the Biblical tale of Armageddon comes to your
computer. But don't we all really want to play as the horsemen, and bring the
earth to its destruction through pestilence and death? Well, maybe that wouldn't
offer such good replay value....
Rule Earth, win big
Sierra officially announced its Empire Earth world championships this
week. Teams will play in a series of regional tournaments, then step up to
national tournament and finally to the world championship where a whopping
$100,000 will be up for grabs (which is approximately how much I get paid for
each Game.Ars column, plus or minus $100,000). Empire Earth has sold more
than a million copies worldwide, and an expansion is due in September.
Microsoft and Ensemble Studios have started a sweepstakes that will send one
lucky winner to Greece. They are doing this totally out of the goodness of their
hearts, oh, and also to promote their upcoming game, Age of Mythology.
But mostly, it's just because they are such nice people.
If you want to enter for a chance to win, head over to the Age
of Mythology site, and good luck! The grand prizewinner will receive a seven-day, six-night trip for two to Greece, which includes hotel, round-trip airfare and
$800 (US) in cash.
Role playing gets divine
Fans of RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Diablo will all get a
tingle in their nether regions when they read about Larian Studios' upcoming Divine
Divinity. The European-developed RPG promises a blend of quest-based role
playing and hack-n-slash action to suit the tastes of any gamer. Gamespot.com
did an in-depth preview of the game, with video footage, and this is what they
revealed:
"The game will let you play as male or female versions of three basic characters: warrior, wizard, and survivalist."
- Andrew Seyoon Park for Gamespot.com
'Hmmm,' I thought, 'Survivalist?'
"Survivalists are the thieves of Divine Divinity. They use their superior agility to sneak past enemies, ambush opponents with backstabbing attacks, and get into secure areas by picking locks."
- Andrew Seyoon Park for Gamespot.com
'Oh,' I thought, 'Survivalist is a fancy-pants name for thief.'
The game is played with the isometric viewpoint that seems to be the default
RPG/action look made so popular with the Diablo series. The developers
say that it draws its inspiration from the Ultima series, and that can
mean only good things... right? (One word: Ascension). Never mind, go
check out the
Divine Divinity mojo at Gamespot.com.
New NOLF shots
Some cool
new screenshots of No One Lives Forever 2 at the Adrenaline Vault
have revealed the wild antics that will be present in the game. Apparently
players will be able to set traps as devious as the fabled "slippery banana
peel." Oh man, that's almost too dangerous. And what's more, at least one
level will include a tornado as a bad guy. Well, not a 'guy' per se, but it will
come at you with high wind speeds, threatening to mess up your hair and maybe
tear loose change from your pockets, scattering it all over the place.
The beta test for NovaLogic's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down has gone
live and it's waiting for you. The multiplayer download will be available
for download until August 9th and the test is due to end a week later. Up to 32
players can compete together, so call 31 of your closest friends and head
over here to have some beta testing fun (which is sure to include many
wonderful crashes and freezes and glitches). Enjoy.
Games sell, but who's buying?
I am still sad that Rollercoaster Tycoon has dropped off the top-ten
list. It was there for more than 24 months straight and, well, it was like an
old friend. It was something I could depend on from week to week but it's gone
now.... Anyway, I think they should change the name of the "top ten
list" to this:
"The top six list... and The Sims"
Here are the top-ten sellers for the week of July 14-20 according to the NPD
Group.
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos - Vivendi Universal
The Sims: Vacation - Electronic Arts
The Sims - Electronic Arts
Neverwinter Nights - Infogrames
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Electronic Arts
Backyard Baseball 2003 - Infogrames
Grand Theft Auto III - Rockstar
Zoo Tycoon - Microsoft
The Sims: Hot Date - Electronic Arts
The Sims: Livin' Large - Electronic Arts
