This week is all about previews. There are a lot of titles lining up for release later this year and game sites have been talking them up all week. There are links to a new James Bond title, more Medal of Honor, more Icewind Dale and, of course, the evolution of The Sims. Lots of good reading and plenty of screenshots, too. If you want to know what the next wave in PC games is going to be, this week's Game.Ars will put you in the know.

So settle in for another week of gaming goodness and get your credit card balance cleared. We've got some serious gaming to get ready for.

Shaken, not stirred

James Bond is on his way to the PC in a big way. Later this year, Gearbox Studios will release Nightfire, letting action/adventure lovers take on the role of fiction's greatest secret agent. According to Amer Ajami at Gamespot.com, the game will feature the "exotic locations, outrageous spy gadgets, and of course, the requisite Bond girls" that made the movies popular. Even if you aren't a Bond fan (what's the matter with you?), Nightfire has promise to be a great game anyway. After all, the teams behind such titles as Half-Life: Opposing Forces and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 are on the job here.

Prepare to be a-Sim-elated

As gamers, we all know what kind of impact The Sims has had on gaming. Now that it has outsold Myst and has been installed on computers belonging to people from almost every demographic that exists, we know that computer gaming is something that almost every person can appreciate. And the Internet has had an even more prolific effect on human society -- connecting people from different cultures and geographical areas at blinding speed. It has effectively shrunk the world.

So, when The Sims Online finally hits shelves, I think we are going to see some more data for the record books. IGN.com has recently done an in-depth preview. They had this to say:

"...out of all of the titles there, I have a feeling that one in particular could potentially make EA enough money to buy their own small country. The Sims Online...combines much of the interest that players had with the original Sims with a whole lot of social interaction." - Dan Adams for IGN.com

Expanding on a game with honor

Let's take a peek at another preview over at Gamespot.com. A winner of many "game of the year" awards, including our own GUGOYA, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was certain to get an expansion. The expansion itself was announced a few months ago, but Gamespot got their hands on a late copy and have offered their impressions on everything from the plot to gameplay changes.

"Even with all of its intensity, the expansion promises to not be as frustrating as Allied Assault. The all-too-deadly sniper AI from the original game has been reworked considerably, according to producer Lincoln Hershberger. Specifically, their line of sight has been decreased, and their reaction time has been reduced" Amer Ajami - Gamespot.com

I double-Dale you

BioWare has certainly gotten its money's worth out of the Infinity engine. With titles like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale (and the expansions) racking up big sales across the world, it'll be sad to see this popular game format hit its twilight. And twilight it is, since Icewind Dale II will likely be the end of games made with the Infinity engine. But does that mean we can look forward to Infinity 2 (or some next-gen variation)? Let's hope so, because for any serious role-player out there, BioWare is our knight in shining armor.

Anyway, Icewind Dale II is atop many gamers' wish lists and IGN.com has an in-depth, hands-on look at this upcoming title.

"In particular, we've spent a fair amount of time delving in to the improved character creation process. Icewind Dale II lets you create your own party of six adventurers using the new D&D 3rd Edition rules." - Steve Butts for IGN.com

Get some real Payback

For anyone who enjoys the virtual criminal life that has been so popular in the Grand Theft Auto series, there's a new game coming soon from Apex Designs that will give you a chance at some real payback. And, the game is called, well, Payback. Soon to be available for Windows and Linux, Payback will let you follow a non-linear criminal career across a large number of levels. Your progress is based on a point system, but you can earn your points in any way you choose, either by taking missions or being your own freelance criminal. Sound cool? Click here for more. And thanks to J. Daniels for giving me the look out.

The hot sheet

Life is full of lists, but the one that gets me most excited (except my grocery list) is the top-selling games. I love to see the games I love doing well and it's always interesting to see a game that fell off the charts for a month suddenly reappear (uh, Starcraft Battlechest???). It's just a list, but I love it. Here are the top-10 selling games for the week ending July 6. Data according to NPD.

  1. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos - Vivendi Universal
  2. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Collector's Edition - Vivendi Universal
  3. Neverwinter Nights - Infogrames
  4. The Sims: Vacation - Electronic Arts
  5. The Sims - Electronic Arts
  6. Grand Theft Auto III - Take-Two
  7. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Electronic Arts
  8. Backyard Baseball 2003 - Infogrames
  9. Zoo Tycoon - Microsoft
  10. Starcraft Battle Chest - Vivendi Universal
