“I no longer hack Paypals”: DOGE staffer’s hacker past raises red flags

These weren't misdemeanor offenses expunged once he hit 18, these were things he himself was boasting about. Now, they could be bullshit, sure (kids tend to lie about things almost as much as adults). But, such claims would most definitely be germane to the vetting process seeing that the DOGE...

“I no longer hack Paypals”: DOGE staffer’s hacker past raises red flags

And the IT people that doth protest that this guy has unfettered access to the payroll/direct deposit information for every government employee are currently "under investigation" for "workplace behavior" Makes sense...

For regular books, Amazon’s $280 Kindle Colorsoft falls short of the Paperwhite

It doesn't try to sell you e-books from amazon? Must be a new model, you should give a link I found getting free books from the library via overdrive rather than giving my meager funds to someone who could end world hunger and still be obscenely rich, but instead buys a spaceship, to be pretty...

For regular books, Amazon’s $280 Kindle Colorsoft falls short of the Paperwhite

Here's mine. Kobos fucking rule. They're more money because they don't run ads and they're worth it. Hell, my Clara's like 10 years old and I used it last night. So one can't say they don't get their money's worth. (edit, I guess I should say something about the color since that's the direct...

How the language of job postings can attract rule-bending narcissists

Fuck no, and maybe. When I say "six hours" that's--y'know--cooking*. There's set-up and tear down involved. Which is little more involved that waking up a computer when you come in, then shutting it down for the weekend. *of course that number is the minimum, as on the so rare occasion eight...

How the language of job postings can attract rule-bending narcissists

Hey, I still work as a cook part-time "So, what are you doing this weekend?" "Well, tomorrow morning I'll be cracking eggs and placing them on a plate for six hours in exchange for a couple hundred dollars" "Oh... my girlfriend wants to go for a bike ride..." Personally, I like to get my...

How the language of job postings can attract rule-bending narcissists

I actually asked an HR person about this once, and they told me it was "a way of separating the wheat from the chaff". I guess by ensuring the wheat doesn't bother to apply. Anyway, it's studies like these that made me transition from 'choosing one words carefully' to 'saying whatever I want'...

AI beats humans at meme humor—but the best joke is still human-made

Didn't the whole Garry Kasparov thing prove that when you feed a computer every move from the absolute best chess players from the past 200 years, the computer--in turn--becomes a pretty good chess player, like 30 years ago?

We’re getting a full-size Portal pinball table before Portal 3

I think the big difference being that Rudy/Funhouse is supposed to be annoying (he's a ventriloquist dummy, and that's sort of their thing). Whereas, these newer tables just constantly babble for no other discernible reason than they can so they do.

We’re getting a full-size Portal pinball table before Portal 3

This looks veerrry similar to the playfield of Zen's Portal video pinball Edit: Eh, now looking at them side-by-side, definitely some similarities, but not as close as I remembered

Apple M4 MacBook Air review: I have no notes

Not really. Going from 'prohibitively expensive' to 'pricey' is pretty common in the luxury market, as it allows you to sell more units to more people. You can still offer leather bucket seats as not to alienate the robb report set (lest they feel common owning your product).

Spark 2 adds AI, doubles its DSP power to help your guitar rock out

That's fine, but allow me to share a recent anecdote: Two weeks ago a guitar player was in here and his enormously compact and digital set-up wasn't working (I don't know if was 'bricked' per se, but no sound was coming into the board for whatever reason). After giving him ample time to putz...

Spark 2 adds AI, doubles its DSP power to help your guitar rock out

I see. I only played around with a couple of these (I think a fender and a roland, don't quote me), but I was under the impression that all features were available onboard, it was just much, much easier to access/manipulate them via an app. Edit: The person who owns the Fender I was playing...

Spark 2 adds AI, doubles its DSP power to help your guitar rock out

So, why is this triple the price of one of the numerous headphone amps currently available (many of which mentioned in the comments above me)? 50 watts? That would hardly cost you $200 more. I'm sorry, I read the review twice and still feel like I'm missing something.

“They curdle like milk”: WB DVDs from 2006–2008 are rotting away in their cases

This happened to my Warner Archives Terminal Man, thankfully Shout Factory gave it a real release. Not for nothing, this has also happened to pretty much half of the Dreamcast discs I own. They used to call the distributed ripped images "backups", and they had no idea how accurate they were being.

No one asked for this: Google is testing round keys in Gboard

Eh, being cursed with hammer thumbs, I tend to type anything beyond "y", "n", or "idk" with a stylus. And 'round keys + round stylus' makes enough sense for me to at least try it. At any rate, it can't be any worse than gboard's handwriting option for styluses, which is somehow worse than Palm...

Commercials are still too loud, say “thousands” of recent FCC complaints

Both actually. They mix dialog for 'cinematic' fare low on purpose, so you (or the projectionist) has to crank it to be audible, ensuring subwoofers explode with sufficient force when employed (for some reason they're convinced you won't like the movie unless your neighbors complain) Ads...

Commercials are still too loud, say “thousands” of recent FCC complaints

I bought a $150 rack compressor like 15 years ago, as I could see no other solution. When I see the issue has been rectified, I'll unhook it. At press date, I keep seeing articles like this every couple years.
