Anker recalls three iPhone MagSafe power banks due to smoke, fire risk

Anker and Belkin are the only third party manufacturers I use for cabling and power supply.

Human drivers are to blame for most serious Waymo collisions

I am coming to the conclusion that the whole "I'm better than average" thing needs to be reassessed on a daily or hourly basis. If you are calm, attentive and driving defensively, you are vastly less likely to be in or at fault for an accident. If you are having one of those days where you are...

Old Easter Island genomes show no sign of a population collapse

Just throwing extra ideas out there: Uninhabited doesn't mean unvisited. Finding edible, domesticated plants on those islands could be the equivalent of cupboard stocking / emergency cache.

WaveCore blasts gigabit-speed signals through 12-inch-thick concrete

5 and 6 GHz waves will travel through the enormous gaps in rebar with a little attenuation. 2.4 GHz is getting close to or larger than the mesh sizes often used, with a wavelength of about 12.5 cm. That's going to find it harder, but it's better at travelling through the bulk material.

The Moon had volcanic activity much more recently than we knew

The paper shows that there are a lot of lines of evidence being used. In my opinion, it's fairly solid analysis and needs really good contrary data to turn up before rejecting the conclusion. John's article covered almost all the details clearly, but he didn't include that the KREEP materials...

FTC urged to make smart devices say how long they will be supported

It's wishful thinking to consider the US implementing such a law, but examples exist elsewhere. As a suggested model, in NZ we have the Consumer Guarantees Act. It basically requires the seller of a product to repair, replace or fully refund a consumer if an item breaks or otherwise doesn't...

Ukrainian drones now spray 2,500° C thermite streams right into Russian trenches

Followed a ute with a spray drone on the back yesterday. Took up the entire tray and had about 15-20 L of spray capacity.

That book is poison: Even more Victorian covers found to contain toxic dyes

Portable XRF is where it's at. Non-destructive and rapid diagnosis of virtually all metals. A couple of them are not very sensitive (notably lead), so have detection limit issues, but are good enough for determining the presence / absence in the pigment. Final concentration data is best...

Scientists conclude Chicxulub impactor was an asteroid from beyond Jupiter

Substitute basketball with a 7 to 10 kg medicine ball for more realism, if you happen to have one lying around...

BBC article has dropped off the front page. If you want to read it / help a bit of publicity, it can be found here: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c8jl0ekjr0go

NASA is about to make its most important safety decision in nearly a generation

Given the problems they were/are having, is this not best described as an abort to orbit?

All the possible ways to destroy Google’s monopoly in search

WordStar 7 for DOS gets a free re-release from one of its biggest author fans

It's a great question (already answered above). Don't give me anything to do right now that isn't the task that needs doing. Formatting? That needs to wait until I'm finished, else I'll spend all my time doing that instead of writing. Table of contents? Same, but worse. Opportunity to create...

With a landmark launch, the Pentagon is finally free of Russian rocket engines

Wanted to reply with essentially the same response. By forcing full-scale capitalism into the economy without checks as rapidly as possible, it made a small number of people very very rich. Some of these people then used that to buy their way into power, forming an oligarchy. The state systems...

Although it’s not final, SpaceX just got good news from the FAA on Starbase

Well, the revision to 2.3 million pounds is definitely closer, but you are absolutely right that the article should read 23 million pounds. 103 MN / 9.81 m/s/s = 10.5 Mkg 10.5 Mkg * 2.20 lb/kg = 23.1 million pounds

Broken Linux laptop makes for a fine smart TV alternative

They do: it's called an XBox. We still have a linux laptop connected to the TV for access to a media server (and ad-free youtube), but most of our viewing has moved to an XBox and streaming apps because it's easy and just works.

Illegal drug found in Diamond Shruumz candies linked to severe illnesses

Not the manufacturers, that's for sure. Guessing here, but I'm reasonably confident that the closest they have come to a lab was to test the ingredients once (at a contract lab) when formulating the product, then assume that everything was schweeet from there.
