New Apple TV 4K, powered by A15 chip, adds Dolby Vision and HDR10+

*cries* I just bought one during the Amazon mini sale this past week! Good thing I've not opened it yet so I can return it back when this one drops.

That HD10+ is a really nice value add for sure 'tho it's pretty crummy they're snipping ethernet from the cheaper one and reserving it for the more costly one. The remote charging with USB-C is a nice feature but wonder how useful it will be for those who already have a lot of lightening cables.

Didn't the Apple TV 4k already support Dolby Vision and Atmos?

The only new thing I'm seeing here is HDR10+

The OG AppleTV 4K had DV support, so that's nothing new. However, it does look like this version may support Atmos over lossless TrueHD since it mentions 7.1 configs. Before it only supported Atmos over lossy DolbyDigital Plus.

I'm also assuming that Apple is still insisting on doing all audio decoding on the device and only allows passthrough when Atmos is detected.

I think apple is going to be moving to USB-C for everything pretty soon. The new entry level ipad that was also announced today uses USB-C. I expect all their products will use it by next year this time.

No Ethernet on the cheaper model is stupid, but at least the step up doesn't cost that much more.

It’s such a weird thing to cheap out on, but I don’t really keep up with steaming boxes so I assume most of the competition doesn’t have one at all. Even when I had a Nexus Player I had to use an OTG Ethernet dongle.

They kept the 9th gen around as a cheaper option (since the 10th gen pricing is ludicrous). And oddly they require 1st gen Pencil for that, though that is Lightning only and it can’t be charged by the 10th gen base iPad.

Who knows what they’re doing other than minting money.

Of course. I bought the now-old ATV 4K last week during Amazon’s early Black Friday sale. $125 for the 128Gb model is only ~$20 cheaper than the new model.

Good thing the return window runs into January ‘cause Amazon’s getting it back.

Market timing the AppleTV isn't easy! I bought the old 4k with the glasspad remote at a discount thinking a new one was right around the corner. That model stayed current for two years after I bought it. I also bought a (now last gen) 4k with the newer remote like 3 months ago. Oh well, at least the price was good.

Ooooh. This might solve a weird Plex audio lag problem. Infuse supports passing through object based audio like Atmos and DTS:X, but Plex has to downconvert to LPCM for passthrough audio on its app. Thanks for flagging this!

The cheapo streaming sticks generally don't have Ethernet NICs and you need to drop $20 on an adapter, but the more expensive products that would go against the Apple TV, like the NV Shield TVs, do have Ethernet. Even the small streaming-stick-like base NV Shield TV manages to include Ethernet. Looks like the Roku Ultra, which is under $100, also has Ethernet.

Just keep in mind it's speculation until units are in the hands of actual people who can test.

Are there any existing Apple devices that have an Ethernet port?
Don't the old Apple TVs?

I've been looking since 2015 for an Nvidia shield replacement. Must have 4K, HDR, DV, lossless audio bitstreaming (TrueHD/Atmos (not the watered down DD+ version), Ethernet, and can use HDMI CEC or some other non-AppleTV remote. Also must officially support streaming services unlike the cheap Chinese Android boxes (lack of 4K Netflix for example).

Still seems to miss the mark...

You're going to be looking for a looooooooong time with that list. The 2019 Shield is still as close as we have to the perfect streaming device, and sadly it's still saddled with the X1 and it's shitty scaler.

I mean, this ticks off everything except TrueHD.

Do any streaming services support TrueHD? I was always under the impression that every platform used DD Plus.

Me three, lol. $150 for 128GB and an A15 is kind of a no-brainer for longevity and gaming. I might be more conflicted if it was a choice between the Ethernet port and the newer processor, but you can get it all with the more expensive model.

FYI, HDMI CEC Support has been present in every Apple TV 4K (I say this as a 1st-Gen aTV 4K owner that uses his Samsung TV remote for his aTV.)

I personally agree, however I bet they have data for how often the eth interface is used on the various models and I bet its a drop in the bucket, particularly on the lower tier SKUs. I personally use ethernet, how else can I reliably stream the uncompressed Dolby Vision blueray I ripped to my Plex server and not crush the wifi for everyone in the house. But I am aware I'm the exception not the rule.

OT: Can we update the article to clarify that DV has been available on the ATV for years now? Its been a while since I upgraded my ATV and its beginning to show signs of its age, juddery interface on occasion and a bit sluggish at times. A new CPU with better GPU capabilities would be great. And I can repurpose the old one for something, I'm sure...

Not really. I'd bet the vast majority of customers simply aren't wired for Ethernet at home, so their home entertainment devices are all Wi-Fi and connected to a wireless router that is set up in the home office or bedroom.

That's how I'm set up, with my work laptop connected via Ethernet to the router mounted on the wall next to my desk because it needs the most reliable connectivity. With my Wi-Fi 6 Nighthawk router and gigabit service, my Apple TV and Xbox has all the bandwidth they need. I never have any problems streaming 4K HDR on the Apple TV wirelessly.

If someone really needs Ethernet they can upgrade to the more expensive model, but I think most people are more than willing to trade the Ethernet port for the cheaper starting price (although the old model was on sale a LOT).

DD+ supports 7.1 (unlike standard DD which goes up to 5.1) so I wouldn't read into that much.
