After market tumult, Trump exempts smartphones from massive new tariffs

Now that China knows where the weak spot is, what stops them from placing an export tariff on electronics bound for the US?

They still want to sell products and have foxconn make a ton of money?

Export tariffs are used to make sure there is enough supply to satisfy domestic consumption. It wouldn't actually serve any purpose for China.

Randomly fucking with a trillion dollar business just to piss off your "enemies" but with no clear policy goal or strategy is something only complete idiots do.

Emphasis mine.

Oh, don't worry, Niyazov wrote the book...no literally, he wrote a book and it was mandatory not only in schools but pretty much everyone in the country had to read it. Tests based on his book were required for promotion in government. I believe he also renamed bread after his mother-in-law*.

And I believe that Ne Win of Burma/Myanmar ordered that all currencies be reprinted in denominations of 30, 60, and 90 quatloos or whatever, instantly making all existing cash worthless. He also switched his country's driving to the right side of the street but confusingly continued to import British left-hand-drive cars.

What I'm trying to say is, we're still in Purgatory. Would you like me to be your guide to the levels of government hell?

(the answer is "hell no", by the way)

*It might have been his mother, Wikipedia just mentions that he named a bunch of stuff after family members

They're dealing with one.

Finished goods are typically not exempted, only specific components. So the chip might be exempt but the case and battery are not, otherwise someone could smuggle non-exempt goods inside an exempted product. The sender must be able to coherently break down each exempted component on the manifest entry system to claim the exemption, otherwise tariffs still apply at the 145% rate. This is just more corruption from Trump exempting his corporate buddies. You can bet Apple will be able to supply the correct paperwork, but an AliExpress seller sending you a tablet or phone surely won’t and you will have a nasty full 145% tariff bill waiting to happen. Then it is on you to request a duty drawback by filling out a form requesting a refund for the specified exempt components you were wrongly charged tariffs on. Maybe you can ask Eva for help! LOL! Good luck. The real devil is always in the details, not in the propaganda social media posts.

China is putting export licenses on a number of goods. It's not about pissing off the US, it's about denying us strategic opportunities. If not for the chaos of the tariffs it probably would have been reported on and people seen it as a threat, but I've seen almost no reporting on it because nothing can break through Trumps 'look at me' noise. China making the most of the opportunity.

Were you aware that China has blocked all LNG sales from the US? Gave that contract to Australia, wedging our trade alliance. Also blocked all beef sales from the US. Also went to Australia. (Worth noting, we tariffed Australia, and China welcome their exports).

China has blocked sales of a number of rare earth elements to the US - mainly ones we rely on for things like EVs and defense production. Almost no reporting on that. All the initiatives that Biden started and Trump has suggested in concept are now much harder to pull off.

China will lift their reciprocal tariffs and leave these larger structural things in place. Playing the long game and using Trumps own chaos as cover.

Democrats just need to hammer home the message that tariffs are direct taxes on people who buy the products. They are so bad at messaging.

However, they are not as bad as the Republicans who are responsible for rolling over to this insanity.

Democrats are bad at messaging. It's true. And by and large, mediocre as a political party. Certainly with various members swayed by various forms of corruption by varying degrees. Often failing to fully carry through when needed, even when opportunities arise. When taken as a whole, they represent a complicated compromise, which is hardly promising.

Republicans are straight up evil at this point, or at best are all "duped" accomplices to evil that somehow fall for it each and every time and still come back to the koolaid fountain yelling "MORE MORE" while claiming they aren't, themselves, THAT evil, and they only voted about... some less evil issue than whatever is happening.

But wait, someone's going to try to "both sides" that, any moment now.

The Democrats are never going to be the heroes everyone wants, but nobody ever was, because "heroes" as a group are a lie that reality never lives up to once you move beyond a single dimension or basic action. All the people who cry that they can't get some perfect hero of an entire political party are always going to be disappointed. At some point you have to accept that there is mediocrity (in terms of groups of people), and there is evil, and you absolutely have to get motivated for putting mediocrity in power over evil, and then work to make the mediocrity a bit better. The better side will always be a lump of compromises, because that's what happens with groups of people who aren't sociopaths or indoctrinated into a cult of targeted hatred or fascism. It will still be, by FAR, the better side and the better choice.

The only sort of "all sides" is that we're ALL screwed without campaign finance reform, and there's no realistic path to it at this point. But the Democrats are still by far the better of the two even there.

Well, China seems to be winning this one. I am not a fan of the CCP regime, but anyone shitting on Trump's face is a friend to me for now.

Canada+UK+Greenland+EU economic, space and defence union needs to happen now. Together we can withstand Trump's BS and play as boldly as China and win, instead of kissing the orange ass and making compromises like modern day Neville Chamberlains. The longer we pussyfoot and delay and hope that the old America will come back, the worse it will be. Trump and his nationalists already have their sights set on Canada and Greenland. They want to relitigate the war of 1812. Together we can defend ourselves against both Russia and America, both are oligarchic imperialist kleptocracies. We could ride out the economic warfare as well. Especially if we add in Aus and NZ to the union as well. Isolate America, because even if Americans vote him out, we know that we can't ever rely on America again and because we know that enough Americans are stupid and evil enough to vote for this. Even if Trump and the GOP are totally voted out, the USA can never ever be relied on as a strategic partner in economy or defence ever again, it may be un-isolated, but it will never be trusted or deferred to again. The empire is over.

"Trump said he would consider excluding US companies from his tariffs, but added that such decisions would be made 'instinctively.'" Nothing like getting expert advice from various people, preferably with differing opinions; nothing like doing an analysis. Nothing like looking at history to see how this sort of thing has turned out before. Nor even pretending that the Stable Genius relies on his own intellect (not that that would help). Just instinct, like a cat or dog.

Either FT didn't link to the notice, or it didn't pass customs:

https://archive.is/o2ljl

Don't mistake me for a customs lawyer, but I think 8473.30 covers most of the fun stuff on ali and pcbway
Will it actually exempt them, though? With the de minimis removal, does that mean the parcel will get held up at a customs facility waiting for inspection and you to pay the tariff of $0, plus whatever the customs processing fees are?

Put another way, why won't Ali/Temu/etc just label all their parcels with these tariff codes, which would act as a DDOS on customs? After all, lying is not exactly new to their platforms.

I wish I was still actively trading because I would have made a small country's GDP out of trading Apple options during this shitshow. I'm sure a bunch of people did.

This is increasingly a transfer of wealth from retirees and retail investors to the rich. Never lose sight of that.
Apple's stock moved hours before it was publicly announced. Someone knew.
