France fines Apple €150M for “excessive” pop-ups that let users reject tracking

Finally. So many unanswered feedbacks and Apple never went back to revisit the implementation and how poorly it approaches the problem. Apple’s entire portfolio on privacy somehow always ends around “introducing a feature that sounds awesome in a keynote” and never far enough to make it...

EU will go easy with Apple, Facebook punishment to avoid Trump’s wrath

I don’t think the title is the only interpretation. I can imagine a much more likely angle where the goal is to keep the process constructive. It makes more sense to put forward structural changes which effectively deal with the problem. After all, the goal of the EU is not to collect fines but...

The CDC buried a measles forecast that stressed the need for vaccinations

I wonder if we’ll end up calling it “the American virus” (similar to Covid’s label among the MAGAs in the early days)

Apple barred from Google antitrust trial, putting $20 billion search deal on the line

I was thinking the same - show a random list with a nice filter and let people choose, problem solved. I even think it would be cool if they take a similar approach for the browser itself.

    Apple TV+ reportedly loses $1 billion a year, and that’s okay—for now

With ATV+ we also get to a point where you just keep scrolling titles and yet, there is nothing to watch. Just like Netflix.... so why pay for two of the same. It would be nice if we can just buy series/movies instead of having yet-another-sub.

    Apple TV+ reportedly loses $1 billion a year, and that’s okay—for now

I think, this is the kind of news that should spark the “cartel” talk. There is a fine line when funding one’s other ventures, but can you imagine being so huge and so sure your customers can’t flee elsewhere that you can loose $1 billion for years just to see where it goes.

EU accuses Google and Apple of stifling competition under Digital Markets Act

That's not the issue - the custom chip inside AirPods makes AirPods special, yes, and the EU demands that Apple allow for anyone to be able to make their own flavour of "special". This is currently impossible as Apple is gatekeeping APIs required to support advanced Bluetooth accessories, thus...

EU accuses Google and Apple of stifling competition under Digital Markets Act

I think you're working with incorrect information. The requirements of the DMA have been in the works for years (and both Apple and Google had been given a chance to offer input). The specific technical mandate towards Apple is the result of feedback from actual companies and developers building...

EU accuses Google and Apple of stifling competition under Digital Markets Act

I'm quite flabbergasted to read how folks are taking this out of proportion. This bloodthirsty defence for corporations is irrational and rather self-destructive. Have you actually read the proposed technical changes? The result of the changes (for example) would be vendors will be able to...

iPhone 16e review: The most expensive cheap iPhone yet

Of course, it is a factor. It's not something that just happened to them. Apple had generous donations towards the new "regime" as well as continued interest in finding ways to escape paying taxes or having to compete on fair grounds (e.g. still fighting GDPR and the DMA). Would you buy a phone...

iPhone 16e review: The most expensive cheap iPhone yet

Indeed, my old iPhone is barely holding up but the replacement is not going to be made (or designed) in the US. I’m hoping the situation would improve by the time I have no choice but to replace it, otherwise it will be some unnamed Google-less Android for me.

Apple appeals UK’s secret demand for backdoor access to encrypted user data

There seems to be some confusion here, Apple is doing something, because it’s good PR. Apple’s “privacy” features are very selective to allow things Apple wants (like sending all AI transcripts, spotlight and Safari searches, Photos etc for training in various forms) vs. features Apple’s...

SpaceX readies a redo of last month’s ill-fated Starship test flight

Is Elon riding inside the rocket this time? Oh that would be glorious.

Education tech firm sues Google over AI search summaries

It would be “just competition” if Google had setup a dedicated page where people need to go to use Gemini. By integrating their search platform (where Google has a monopoly on the market), Google makes it impossible to compete on fair terms. In addition, Google is trying to be both content...

iOS 18.3.1 update fixes security flaw used in “extremely sophisticated attack”

We can also stop simping for big corps. Just because the other guy is bad doesn’t make it right. The Apple of old is long gone, but everyone keeps drooling with nostalgia and admiration. Remember, we used to be in control of our devices, the corps had to fight for our attention. Now we give it...

T-Mobile expands Starlink texting service to cover Verizon and AT&T users

The emergency being Elon Musk needs to FOMO everyone into paying a subscription they don’t need. If you had a functioning government, they’d make this into policy so “emergency coverage” is available to all without having to pay out of pocket (that’s why taxes exist).

Report: iPhone SE could shed its 10-year-old design “as early as next week”

Among my test devices, I have a budget Android phone (200€} and it has Touch ID on the unlock button on the side. Usually, by the time bring the phone to my face, it’s already unlocked. I can unlock and use it with one hand and never even bring it to my face. By contrast, my amazing 2000€...

NASA moves up target to return Butch and Suni, but not for political reasons

Can you imagine yourself in the shoes of those astronauts (and everyone in the space program, really)? You work your entire life, you dedicate every moment to becoming better so you can do For All Mankind stuff, advancing the human race forward... only to have all your accomplishments lost in...

Starlink profit growing rapidly as it faces a moment of promise and peril

And that's why "normal" countries don't put CEOs in government, because legislation and policy doesn't mix with founder mode. Even better, government and policymakers are not allowed to have business interests or receive contributions of any kind. Because remember... they're all supposed to be...

The long-planned return of two astronauts from space is now a political issue

I miss the days when we had STS missions. Each one was exciting - the vehicle, the mission, reading about the science experiments scheduled to be performed in space etc. It was a big reason I took on the science path in my career. Ever since Space Karen bought his way into the industry, it all...
