Used Intel Macs, usable on a budget or not?

I'm wondering if Intel Macs are more suitable for Linux these days? High quality hardware with nice screens? Does that generally work fine? I'd think Fedora's KDE spin is the best option, as that's what Asahi chose to use?

🦄 The Casual 2024 Presidential Election

Given Biden's "trash"-gaffe, I can't imagine how many more we would have gotten if he was the candidate... He should've withdrawn a year ago such that we'd have a proper primary. It was an uphill battle given that price levels increased 8% from 2017-20, and 20% from 2021-24. Doesn't help the...

Consequences of the US 2024 Presidential Election: Global Geopolitics Edition

In Norway I hope more political parties see we need to join the EU, NATO is no longer a sufficient guarantee (we're already part of the EEA, which means we implement nearly all EU legislation regardless, just don't have a say in the process :) )

iPhone mini – preparing for the future

If I read those right, it will be a ~6.6" screen https://www.macrumors.com/2024/11/01/iphone-17-slim-everything-we-know/ Going Android would be strange, but maybe all the EU DMA efforts make it more fluid in the future to be cross-platform...

iPhone mini – preparing for the future

So I'm one of the few who purchased both the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini (*) I was considering to update to the iPhone 16 Pro to get a better camera, but I've reflected in recent days that I would really miss the one-handed use I'm considering if the drawbacks of going Android may be a...

Indian spice mixes - how to use them?

Thanks for all the input! I will at least try once with one of the spice mixes, and let's see how it tastes :) Never heard of Ghee, but given the large Pakistani immigrant community in Norway I should be able to find it Will update how it goes when I get around to this!

Indian spice mixes - how to use them?

I visited Delhi in 2018 for a wedding, and bought some spice mixes from a store, and they've been sitting on a shelf since then... Now I have two questions: Are they still tasty? I've heard spices lose taste over time. I did a small taste of one vial, and they still had a taste How do I use...

Dishwasher pods suck. Where can I get responsible dish powder? [Austin, TX]

The display showed RLU so I googled and found this: https://www.infectioncontroltoday.com/view/adenosine-triphosphate-atp-bioluminescence-testing-performance So maybe it is not as alarming as it sounds, but I still prefer to rinse off dirty dishes before placing them in the dishwasher

Dishwasher pods suck. Where can I get responsible dish powder? [Austin, TX]

It is actually a good idea to wash off the dishes before you put them in, otherwise they will look clean, but won't be This was tested by one of the consumer television programs in Norway (I assume this shows a translate button in your browser)...

Update all the things! iOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia are out

I can no longer use AirFlow to AirPlay to my Apple TV, but casting to the built-in Chromecast works fine. tvOS just shows a black spinning screen that stops after a few seconds

The New Israel/Palestine Conflict Thread: Read the OP Before Posting

The Israeli government have now expelled 8 Norwegian diplomats for the "extreme act" of recognizing the Palestinian state https://www.reuters.com/world/israeli-rejection-norwegian-diplomats-palestinian-areas-is-extreme-norway-says-2024-08-08/ It's usually the likes of Russia that does things...

🦄 The Casual 2024 Presidential Election

I don't get all the dunking on Silver. He made the case for Harris before Biden dropped out, and this hits the nail on the head: https://www.natesilver.net/p/the-case-for-and-against-kamala-harris

    The Mysterious Rise of Obesity

That can't be true. A one hour jog is around 600 kcal on my Apple Watch, that is not really insurmountable unless you're lazy. Also, you do move around during the day, reducing the required exercise time. (I admit I'm lazy most days, my 620 kcal target comes from selecting "moderate" fitness...

    Business laptop recommendation?

Ah, ok, didn't know that, Apple also has the Fn-ctrl layout :p I called HP and it turns out there's no cellular modem in the laptop. I brought this up with the store and they asked what would be a fair refund for having the wrong specs on the website when I purchased it... Let's see, when we...

    Business laptop recommendation?

Randomly found that there's a "HP Audio control" app on the notebook. That had a mindboggling stupid setting to use "AI" noise control and "conference mode". After setting the noise control to "normal" + "personal" mode it seems to work... Now the only issue is that the built-in 5G modem...

    Business laptop recommendation?

Haven't really thought about the possibility of returning it... The three problems I noted have been persistent, but there was a bunch of firmware updates released yesterday, so let's see if things improve I also get complaints about the mic cutting out when I speak. I have turned off noise...

Does Apple make desktops for 2024?

The one I have is the Samsung 27" S80PB, 320 USD in Norway compared to >1400 USD for the available 5k Retina models (LG, Apple, Samsung) Works fine, I have also just set it to 2560x1440 resolution and that works surprisingly well too to get more space I like it better than the native 27"...

    Microsoft Office and OS X

Pretty sure it's your default system delimiter, and whatever you've set the "text to columns"-wizard to the last time If it's from a .csv you can also do Data->Get Data (Power Query)->From Text (Legacy) to get a more robust interface. (LibreOffice has a handy import interface when you open a...
