Trump’s 25% tariffs take effect; Canadian PM calls it “a very dumb thing”

And when 90% of our produce goes up 25-40% in price, and an F-150 gets a $90000-10,000 price increase tomorrow, we'll see how the electorate feels about that.

Also, to any Canadian or Mexican readers: you have been the steadfast allies, friends, and supporters of my country, even when it didn't benefit you to be, for generations. You should be our most valued trading partners and closest allies. I am so very sorry.

Hell, I moved up the purchase of a new dive computer to avoid a $250+ price hike that'll obviously be coming.

To our Canadian posters and readers: sorry we to the immediate south (and west I guess) suck.

One thing that is not specified in the article, is that the Canadian government has previously said that the retaliatory tariffs target Republican states, specifically.

This only ends when the MAGA crowd comes back to reason. How much damage this is going to take is anyone's guess.
Another thing not specified in the article is that about 80% of Canadians are actively avoiding buying US-sourced goods when we can and are cancelling vacations to the point that airlines are cancelling flights.

I’m guessing it’ll be Biden’s fault. These are not people prone to accepting responsibility for their choices.

It took a good many years before voters kicked Herbert Hoover out of the white house. Great depression levels of suffering was needed.

Oh, the committed supporters will never give an inch. But there's a lot of Biden voters who stayed home, and a lot of voters on the fence who voted for what they thought would be pro-business and anti-inflation policies.

"We will always seek a negotiated solution, in a framework of respect." Sheinbaum said Mexico wants "dialogue, with reasoning and rationality."

What are you on about? You aren't gonna get it. Just spit in his goddamn face.
Well, it fucking sucks to say it, but he holds most of the cards here.

To do this to your own allies, misunderstanding the nature of national allegiances, is the height of foolishness. The U.S. has just willingly decided it no longer wants to be the most powerful empire on Earth. I'd say this was a good thing, but Republican voters likely wouldn't, and I certainly didn't want it to be accomplished in this way, by making us the world's pariah.

"MAGA crowd" voters are on levels of "fell for it again award" that are literally unprecedented in our human species.

Don't hold your breath, or the oxygen deprivation may make you as stupid as they are

that's what the far-right voted for, not the center-right.
Nearly two thirds of your voting population chose this. Half of those by actively voting for a fascist government, and the remainder by sitting on their hands and doing nothing to stop it.

You don't get to blame what's happening on the "far right". This is what America asked for.

Eating apples instead of oranges is now an act of resistance and patriotism. Definitely easier than all the stuff my great-grandparents had to do back in France during WWII.

So inflation in the US is going to skyrocket right? then interest rates will go up.

How long before all the debt so many American's are in causes them to mass protest?
Russians are living with 20% interest rates without protesting. I'm sure Trump can learn from his idol.

Damn Biden DEI making groceries expensive again.
I understand this is a joke, but I think we need to push back against these kinds of claims when they are made seriously. The right's going to say it and the legacy media's going to publish that the right said it without any pushback, so I think it's going to be up to us.

Damn Trump, Project 2025, and Republicans making groceries expensive again.

The only way this gets solved is if the economy crashes to below the level of the 2008 Great Recession, which of course the reds will somehow blame Biden for. Market was doing just fine until the orange haired muppet got into office and started firing people.
This all makes more sense when you understand Musk and the Yarvin cult literally want to destroy the US government and economy so they can replace it with technofascism and crypto.

Canada was smart to target goods that come predominantly from States which voted for Donald Trump to begin with.
The feds did. Ontario does not give a fuck. It slapped a 25% export duty on electricity that powers 1.5 million homes in New York, Minnesota and Michigan. Ontario also controls about half of America's nickel imports.

We're also responsible for almost all of your potash imports - and America's new overlord Russia cannot make that up.

Your prices across the country are about to skyrocket.

And I have no sympathy whatsoever.

The thing is...

Most of what we get from Mexico and Canada are things that we are not going to forego because of the higher prices. This won't affect them all that much.

It WILL affect US consumers who will see 25-40% price hikes in the very short term, combined with the start of a recession leading to job losses...Welcome back to the wonderful world of Stagflation. It's the late 70's all over again.

I can't think of a plan more guaranteed to deep-six America than the one currently being run.

Yes. The US economic elite is dismantling the richest and most powerful nation in the world for no reason at all. The weird thing is that no one is benefiting from this except maybe Putin. If congress had any brains they should impeach Trump but it seems like the republicans in congress are as corrupt as him.

Speaking to the camera, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed U.S. President Donald Trump directly.

“It’s not in my habit to agree with the Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you're a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do,” he said.
Trudeau was quoting the WSJ, so it's not really his words.
