The true meaning of MacOS....

I'm using the DOJ Finding of Facts as precedence when calling Apple a monopoly. And when i said strangely quiet, I meant openly praising it the way the Linux people are.
Think of this: Apple has a monopoly over the consumer PowerPC market. Being joe blow, I know that IBM sells some sort of PowerPC setup. Now, if i wanted to buy a clearly superior RISC-based system, I can only buy it straight from Apple. Why is that? Using their monopoly power over PowerPC RISC-based systems, they killed all the clone manufacturers. Thus, I, the consumer, am hurt by this because Apple charges artificially high prices for the hardware I want. Next, when I shell out my $$ and buy their system, I am having the horrible kludge of an OS forced upon me, when I don't want it. I can't get a system preloaded with Linux or the BeOS. In fact, they stopped Be from making the BeOS run on the G3s and G4s. Microsoft hasn't stopped Be from running BeOS on the x86, they don't even have the power to do this. In the x86 world, I can still get a system that comes with BeOS or Linux pre-loaded. Thus, Apple is using their obvious monopoly in PowerPC risc-based systems to force me to buy the MacOS along with their computer. The only reason they haven't crushed Wintel is because the Wintel setup is better than this, because x86 is open (meaning you can get what you want from wherever or whomever you want), while Apple maintains a much tighter stranglehold over pretty much their entire Architecture. Apple using its 'monopoly' to force me, the Joe Blow (mindless) conumer to buy (or receive for free) their OS along with their computer at artificially high prices is the same as Microsoft using their 'monopoly' in Operating systems for x86-based systems to force me to buy (or receive for free) Internet Explorer. Apple used hardware licensing practices to force Be and the clone manufacturers completely of the PowerPC system market. Microsoft tried to use software licensing practices to force alternative OSes out of the OEM market, with moderate success among the biggies (i.e. Compaq) who need to sell Windows too, and artifically raised the price of Windows to a point that was higher than necessary.
This is why I hate Apple a whole lot more than Microsoft. Another thing I hate is that the DOJ is basing all their stuff on the mindless consumer. I know I can pickup a copy of Linux and install it on an iMac or G3 by hand, and use the BeOS G3 hack to get the BeOS to work. <sarcasm>But of course, i'm only a mindless consumer, and can't do something complicated like this, being too dumb. Besides, Linux is only a fringe OS that has nowhere near the functionality of Windows, which is naturally Microsoft's fault through bad business practices.</sarcasm>
As a Disclaimer, I think the BeOS is pretty sweet, being like a blend of MacOS and Unix (what I had wished MacOS was for years), and I use Linux religously on my home box most of the time. I also dual-boot Win2000 Advanced Server on that same machine, and enjoy Win2k also. If it had not been for the fact that I thought that the MacOS was a piece of sh*t, I would have probably gotten a Mac (or clone) a long time ago. Of course, I probably wouldn't have been able to afford the high-prices that Apple charges anyhow.
(edit: typos)
[This message has been edited by xwred1 (edited December 05, 1999).]

Whoa, Whoa, WHOA, WHOA! Back up a second......BeOS on a G3? Are you kidding me? Show me a link, a email address, hell a fuckin' surface address and I'll hitchhike there!
Or, did I read your post wrong?
God, I am praying that I read that right.....
In other news, when are those bastards coming out with the CHRP mobo's anyway?
Dajjal
[This message has been edited by Dajjal (edited December 06, 1999).]

Well, I dug around and couldn't actually find his post, but I assume he's probably using the BeOS-G3 hack. One of the things that makes me mad is that the justice department is gonna screw Microsoft because they think most people are too dumb to be able to change the OS on their new machine they just got from an OEM. The same state is there with G3/G4 and BeOS/Linux, but you have to do even more work to get those to work, courtesy of Apple meddling.
I wonder how things will turn out once those IBM boards finally end up on the shelves.

>Hey, Apple is a whole lot worse than Micro$oft. I think they're more of a monopoly than Microsoft. Noticed how they've been strangely quiet about the whole Microsoft Antitrust trial?
Avadis Tevanian, Apple's lead OS programmer, testified agains M$ during the earlier stages of the trial.
BTW, if you don't own a Mac, it's pretty futile to have such strong feelings against Apple. Let us Mac heads handle that... View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And don't blame apple bout Beos, Linux crowd seem to be doing just fine without apples help. So they could do it, but don't???

This has been covered. The PPCLinux crowd is not a company. As a corporate entity, Be Inc. cannot just hack someone's hardware because they refuse to release the Specs for the 'bios' (not sure what the mac considers its bios, hence the ' ')
Is has nothing to do with the G3 processor itself... as its been stated (in this thread even) older PPC's with G3 upgrade cards will work with BeOS.

I saw an interview with Be a while ago and the interviewer asked something to the effect of "Why isn't be out on the Apple G3 boxes? Those things are pretty quick, BeOS would scream on one" The BeOS guy said that internally, they have done it through reverse engineering, but they can't sell it in the BeOS because of legal issues created by Apple concerning the firmware of the motherboard or something like that. He also said that there is a hack/patch out someplace that you could manually apply to get the BeOS to work. YellowDog linux can go on G3 or iMac straight out of the box because linux is free and open-source, so there is no single body controlling it, thus, noone apple could legitimately threaten to sue.

Sh!t, not even all G3 upgrade cards work with BeOS. I had a Mac 6400/180 that I was using BeOS on and I was totally psyched when I could finally afford a G3 upgrade card. I installed the thing and with the driver enabled I couldn't even boot into Be, without the driver Be booted up exactly the same as before, including seeing the old processor!
I got so pissed I sold the whole computer and with the money I got for it I bought a dual processor rig with a boatload of RAM and lots of extra goodies.
Now Be and I are happy again and, as I've got over 14 years of experience with Apple computers I think I've got plenty of 'right' to say all the bad things about them I want.
