I've been playing with a HA docker container on a Synology with 4GB of RAM. Problem is I keep running into stuff that assumes I'm not running in container though, for example the ESP Home setup instructions which tell me to use the built in store that doesn't work in docker. There is probably a workaround, but I'm already annoyed at how time-consuming HA setup is.

What is the best option for running HA without the docker limitations? VM in synology and probably a RAM upgrade? Should I get a Raspberry PI? Something else?

I ended up setting up the VM and importing the config from the container instance. Was really easy, and now configuration is much easier so I'd recommend that.

Anyone tried the Wireguard component in ESPHome? If I understand correctly, provided I have a server with a static IP address, I should be able to configure any ESPHome device to dial back to my HA server over the internet. Or at least I think thats what it can do?

You can always use a dynamic dns service instead of static IP. In my experience, home IPs generally don't change very much, unless you're offline for quite a while.

I have a static IP address, I just don't want to put my HA server directly on the Internet. Using wire guard to a VPN on the ESP directly seems a lot safer.

I've been thinking about getting into ESPHome stuff, but I think I'll pass. For now, at least.

Basically, the bluetooth hardware can be told by the operating system to write to memory and send packets ... which the operating system can already do since it is the operating system. Doesn't appear to be exploitable since you have to send the commands from the OS side.
