When my high school chemistry class did a demonstration that produced CO, the teacher brought in photos of bodies of people who died from breathing CO. The tell-take bright red skin tone made quite an impression on me. I remembered to turn on the hood.

Yeah, I had been wondering about that... no mention of the coloration that would be a sure sign but if they had been dead for a couple days, I don't know if the coloration would have persisted (I mean, I don't know how it works, not that I know how it works and I doubt that the coloration would have persisted).

Reports this morning say that investigators found the front door to his house open but not forced. They also found his wife in the bathtub with a bottle and pills. The report i read said that Hackman was found in his bed in "similar state" Both appear to have been deceased for some time before they were discovered. Starting to look like more than CO2 poisoning though that doesn't explain the death of their dog.

Now I'm wondering if one of them died, the surviving spouse suicided, and the dog found the open bottle of medication the surviving spouse used.
(/Speculation mode off)
I saw an article indicating there were two dogs that were fine but the one that died was kenneled.

Local authorities had a press conference here this afternoon. Both bodies tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning. A video of the presser is in the article linked here: https://www.krqe.com/news/new-mexic...rding-hackman-arakawa-death-happening-friday/ (Warning: I block lots of stuff, no idea what that site might do to you. Sorry.)
Of interest:
He said Hackman’s pacemaker last registered an event on February 17, 2025. “According to the pathologist, I think that’s a very good assumption that was his last day of life,” said Sheriff Mendoza.

Sad to hear... 95 is a good run, but this is odd.

Unforgiven is one of the great masterpieces of the genre. Hackman, Eastwood, and Freeman at the height of their powers. The final confrontation of that movie is one of the best that's ever been filmed.

"You cowardly son of a bitch... you just shot an unarmed man!"
"Well maybe he should have armed himself, before decorating his saloon with my friend."

And the Hackman quote that sticks with me more than any other, even though it's pure deadpan humor: "Must have been those cat-like reflexes..."

RIP to another great actor.

Watched “Unforgiven” again. I’m glad he got a good and long retirement but I do wish there’d been a few more roles.

I don’t think the deaths are suspicious in the sense someone did something to them, though it’s hard to know the story based on what’s released. Lots of info and mis-info out there, but they leaked a few things that suggest there is a lot of information for them to do on.

RIP, indeed, and to his wife as well.

Next I will watch Tenenbaums probably. I (finally) watched French Connection for the first time about a year ago. Hoosiers is also something I like to watch from time to time. I need to revisit Superman (haven’t seen it since probably early 80s on HBO). There are are a whole bunch of movies I never saw yet (Poseidon).

Ben Stiller wrote an interesting op-ed about his brief professional interaction with Hackman on Tenenbaums.
