Wonder if it was tied to a peice of equipment that they either can't, or don't want to, replace.
Or some ancient software they don't want to buy a new version of.

My dad got some photo organizing software that came with a digital camera back when he had a PC running Win98.
He insisted on installing that same software on every subsequent PC, even though it had an annoying tendency to change the registry when installed so that app would launch every time you clicked on the documents folder on every version of Windows through the '00s.

He got a new PC with Win11 a couple of months ago, so I'm really hoping he ditched that software for something else, or found a modern version at the minimum.

I LOOOOOVED my 19" (or was it 20"?) Trinitron I managed to snag for (relatively) cheap around 2005 I think it was. OMG heavy, but amazing picture and the flat tube was outstanding.
Myself, loved mine back then. Sony Trinitron. Multiscan G400. 20" shadow masked flat screen, weighed like a ships anchor. Beautiful gamut. I don't remember what came of it, but it was glorious back in the day. Queue Bruce Springsteen.....

I would impress my colleagues by moving those, moving boat anchors is a technique I learned from working heavy equipment moving service as a youth. The guy who showed me how could do some amazing things with a lever, and I think he had all his toes.

Small, personal victory. At the age of 45, I just did my first-ever handstand pushup. Not against a wall, unassisted. I've been taking Capoeira for about six months now. We don't focus too much on ground work yet, that's more advanced. But I've been going out of my way to practice handstands as well. Well, I finally managed one. It was wobbly, I basically fell over after, and there's a long road to getting enough balance to even do two, but it's my first, and it's mine.

I'm going to be picking my wife up from the airport tomorrow morning as she's coming back after going back to Tokyo to be there when they took her father's remains to its final resting place in the shrine.

Her father was born just before the end of WW2 so he lived through some tough years when he was younger. Life wasn't the easiest at that time and many faced severe food shortages. So, on a lighter note, I'll never forget his astonishment when I brought home 100+ sushi after walking 20 minutes each way in a typhoon (it was in the outskirts of the affected area, more of a torrential rain). 😅

I haven't seen a rotary dialing phone in 40 years

My grandmother had one in her house until she died in the early 90s. I took it and kept it in my room for years.

It got put into storage sometime in the late 90s/early 00s and I'm not 100% sure if my parents kept it or tossed it. I'll have to look the next time I'm there.

I've been noticing that a lot more ads have been getting by my Pi-Hole lately. Also, many websites are now throwing up pop ups to disable ad blockers, and there isn't a workaround that I've found for that yet.
UBlock Origin's Element Picker is pretty decent at getting by those, as long as the side is actually loading the content in the background.

I've seen that in labs, many times. Vendor lock-in. Choices are:
  • Continue to use the perfectly good old scientific equipment on a truly ancient PC
  • Spend $50k+ on all new everything, which will also be locked to using the newly supplied PC.
Which is how I found myself searching for a replacement 5MB Winchester Drive (early IBM hard drive) sometime around 2003 for the ancient PC which drove a nice TGA and DSC. I don't remember the exact cost, but it was under $50, delivered. Thankfully the lab still had the original 5.25" install floppies - and they still worked. I also did some upgrades such as swapping out the 5.25" floppy drive on the FTIR for a 3.5". No external PC, the FTIR saved the spectra to floppy.

I have one in the garage somewhere. It dates back at least to the '70s, from the house I grew up in.

I also have the typewriter I used for my college applications. The kid likes to use it occasionally, though I had to fix the ribbon after the last use - somehow it had jumped the track and then got tangled.

I was woken up in the middle of the night with some bad heartburn. It's been happening more and more lately. Last night was so bad that I went to the bathroom because I thought I was going to throw up. I ended up buying some Tums chewables today to have on hand for the next time it happens.

We live in a world where this exists?

On an unrelated note, when is the next planet-destroying asteroid going to pass our way?
removed: oversize picture of Post Malone branded Oreos, which not having known before I saw that that "Post" and "Malone" had ever appeared in the same sentence, does absolutely nothing to sell Oreos. Also, some dude's name on a box of Oreos do absolutely nothing to make me more of a fan of this dude I never heard of. (I know, I must be some sort of socially isolated Boomer or something.)

But I can see what PM must have been thinking. Anything he can do to get his relatively unknown brand on some popular thing is good for him. I mean even I have heard of him now. Not interested enough to find out more though. It might as well have said Gomer Jublinksy as far as I care, and I imagine almost everyone who never heard of PM shares that view.

I'm great at imagining other people share my views - ask anyone.

But I see nothing at all in this for Nabisco Mendelez. Try out a new flavor? Sure. Tie it to some dude so thoroughly uninteresting I couldn't get one paragraph into the Wikipedia article about him? Not a good idea.

Maybe see a doctor? I got prescribed generic prilosec and it's been working great, plus the Rx for 100 pills is less than the cost of 30 OTC at CVS.

@JasterMereel
Yup. If it happens a lot, you might be at risk for GERD (gastroesphogeal reflux disease), and Prilosec/other proton pump inhibitors are usually really effective and can get ahead of the problem. Better to prevent than treat.*

Maybe ten years ago, when my kids were pre-teens, some media I encountered said Post Malone was the most popular performer with preteen YouTube users. I asked my kids, and they didn't care. I don't think I've tried again to figure out what music they like- it's mostly video game soundtracks.

If you haven't at least heard the name Post Malone enough to recognize it, then I'm guessing you opted out of pop culture a while ago. Nothing wrong with that, most people get locked into "comfortable music I know and loved" as they age, forgoing discovery of new artists/songs/genres.

Apparently he's Grammy nominated in multiple genres, but honestly, I first learned of him due to the dumb face tattoos. Not sure how I feel about his new Country album, but he pulled a bunch of high profile collaborations - which leads me to believe he has a strong brand and national following even if he's not an artist I actively seek out.

Granted, all that matters to me: does the flavor combo sound good? Don't care either way on who's "endorsing" something

I saw those at Costco last week.. The flavor sounds good but I don't think I would be able to tell a Post Malone song if forced to

I may need to see if they have smaller packs in the grocery store.
They're very good, actually. One of the best flavors Oreo has come out with (granted, it's a relatively low bar). My wife doesn't care for regular Oreos and she really liked these. Edit: I showed the Costco pic to her and she immediately checked to see if they were in at any of our local Costcos, so there you go, lol.

The smaller packs were in stores about a month ago, might be harder to find now. They've been replaced with a new s'mores flavor.

Researched the circumstance - my heart goes out to her - and have bookmarked the appropriate places. I will own one of these, and I will be as patient as required until I have the opportunity. It's ironic that for many, the best form of "patience" is not learned until one is old enough that patience might not be recommended given the little time left to exert it. But here we are.

My wife's mom broke her wrist yesterday. She was walking the running course for a relay race we are all doing and slipped. She will be fine, but she's upset that she can't do the race and her arm hurts. My wife is upset that her mom is hurt. I am sorry that it happened, glad that she will be ok, and really wish that both of our sets of parents would stop hurting themselves.
