quote:
FYI my cursory search turned up this which runs on 6 platforms ...

ChilliSoft is indeed the one I meant.
I didn't realize it had so many platforms; I've only ever seen Solaris reviewed. As it stands, it'll run on AIX (way too expensive, limited to an older version), NT (might as well use IIS, because it's free, and all of the web servers that ChilliSoft ASP uses are either commercial, or buggy, or both), and Solaris (way too expensive -- SPARC only). It has other betas, but that's about it. And it costs money.
HP-UX is available for closed beta. The hardware is too expensive. and it's in beta.
Linux is available for open beta. There's no pricing information, though. Perhaps it'll be viable when it's no longer in beta.
OS/390 is 'currently under development'. The hardware is too expensive.
So, uh, which six platforms is it available for?
And how does it help BeOS become a more viable alternative?

quote:
Originally posted by RossJ:
Not true, I have Solaris 7 for Intel ... which cost me nothing ....

Chillisoft ASP is for SPARC only, not Solaris (unless there's something I missed). And SPARC hardware isn't cheap.
Tho' Solaris for x86 doesn't have a wonderful reputation, does it?

Well, if Phyte did want a word like conscious in that context, he should have used consciousness, which is a noun. It's a preddy basic error, although I could forgive it as a typo (except that he verified that that was what he meant) or maybe if English is not his first language. But enough of this.
PeterB may be taking an overly argumentative tone here, but I think he's been consistantly in the right. Other than this I'll ignore the wide-ranging argument between him and his assailants, and concentrate on Phyte.
Phyte's original post can be interpreted as an understandable, if nearly content-free, expression of enthusiasm. I am, however, confused by the following comment:

quote:
The reason that I can't tell you is because I don't want to spoil anything for Be. I *know* what R5 is going to be. I *know* what features its going to have.

Phyte, please verify whether you do in fact have privileged access to information regarding the R5 feature set. If so, we would all no doubt be interested to hear how you came by this information. If not, please explain what you meant by the above comment.

Mr moley:
good, as i said, the timid elements (ie, elements that are scared) run for cover. i hope your hero Phyte is able to defend you...
second, i don't know what your definition of "taking sides" is, but i'd call it "taking sides" as calling one side assholes and defending the other side. but i guess that's just me. go look it up.

quote:
'we have a sentence for people like that. "an annoying person who wants to impress people"'.

yes, this we i'm talking about is the human race. we find people who want to impress other people with nothing but fluff annoying. geez, i think you've just misunderstood. but that's okay.
Now I will try to be clear and concise on my last point. Forget Phyte, forget BeOS or any other Operating System, forget emotive 'xxx rocks' statements. You, Detnap, just you, nobody else in the thread or forum or whatever, are an ASSHOLE. Is this clear enough for you?

quote:
You, Detnap, just you, nobody else in the thread or forum or whatever, are an ASSHOLE. -treatment-
Thats what is so ironic about the whole mess. When I got defensive everyone jumped on me.. So I got more defensive.. and so on. I find it funny how people get off on pointing out that if someone(me) uses a word in the wrong context, they get the idea that English must be a second language. LOL.. All we need now is RiscRocket and IMarshall(sp) and we could hit 1000 posts easy View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've not spent much time in this thread because I haven't seen any content worthy of my time - but it keeps growing and I keep dropping back in to see the progress.
I don't have anything to say about anyone - just an observation: Why do the people who keep ripping on this thread for being a useless, pointless waste of time keep returning to make even more posts about how it's a useless and pointless waste of their time?
Seems to me this thread has provided a living definition of the word "ironic."
And yes, I'll admit to feeling a bit of sympathy for phyte. Phyte, if you want to have a meaningful discussion on this topic, if you'd looked around a bit you'd have found several substantial discussions already in place - and you'd have seen there's no real need to "rally support" at all.
Whatever happened to your attempts at cold fusion on your bebox? Many folks here use and love Be, and many of us (like myself) are open minded enough to be very interested in the possibilities it presents. Why don't you do everyone (most especially yourself) a favor and just hop over there and contribute? Let this embarassing thread die and get on with it.
Hey poptones,
I tried to give up on the last page but it just kept going. I totally agree with you and from this point on I will not be posting anymore to this thread unless I feel that something needs to be addressed(like this post on Cold Fusion).
I'm glad you asked about my ColdFusion venture. I wasn't able to get it installed without the source. There is no way that Allaire would be willing to give that source to me either. What I *am* doing though, is making a list of All Cold Fusion Tags and am going to submit them to the author of Pe and YATE. I will be running Cold Fusion and MySQL on a Mandrake Linux box for my web development.
Phyte

I'm relativley new here to Ars and I know NOTHING about Be. All I've heard is that it is an impressive OS in itself but does not have a lot of developer support. Having just read through this thread, I would have to say that Phyte would be one of the WOSRT advertisements for an OS ever and would be fired immediately if I had anything to do with Be's PR department.

[This message has been edited by otherworld (edited February 01, 2000).]

Phyte, I'd just like to let you know that I think you've really done Be a dis-service with this thread. All in all you're a really nice guy (from what I know of you through BeGroovy) but this is not the way to get people excited. I think that I know all the same information that you know (and likely more) but I'd give people something to go on if I started this thread. Since your not under an NDA there is no problem with you telling these fine folks what you *know* is going to be in R5. Here's a few examples:
RealPlayer G2
new stable version of Opera
Java Virtual Machine
native MP3 player
more codecs
more hardware support
Please note that the items that require a licesnsing(sp?) fee WILL NOT be in the free version.
-Technospider

I'd like to add that Opera is going to be in it's 4.0 release, done nativelly to support Be's features ( the beta port you are used to now is not the one they are including) . As far as i know, Be is the platform that gets Opera 4.0 first which as i understand will be free with the expanded version of BeOS 5, allthough I am sure you allready have paid for it when you bought the copy.
NetPositive isn't dead either. It is updated, allthough not much is known yet. ( taken from Be's Bug pages)
Java2 from sun is there, and Realplayer G2. Quake III can't be far off either i would think along with some customization options, codecs ( perhaps DVD), CD-RW app included, native MP3 support. Mostly under the hood stuff which was true with "Maui" according to the people i have talked to. Not sure if things have been changed since Be decided to release #5 instead of a 4.x release.
There are a few things more that are too vague to be mentioned, but you wont have to wait long now to hear whats included or not.
