Doom marine crashes art gallery, politely sips wine

Just when you thought you had seen every possible Doom mod, two game developers released a free browser game that reimagines the first level of 1993's Doom as an art gallery, replacing demons with paintings and shotguns with wine glasses.

So, I'm fairly familiar with the process of gallery openings and sort of just the nightmare that is going to galleries and experiencing these high-brow, drinking wine, [saying] pompous phrases to each other [kinds of people]."

So someone should reimagine Doom: The Gallery Experience with monocle-wearing demons and instead of drink, you must find books of bon mots to reload your witty repertoire and stun them with your cleverity. If you don't, they'll drone at you until you lose your Awake Points and fall into an eternal slumber.

I've got an idea for an improvement if they're reading this... instead of finding piles of money stashed around the museum (seems a bit odd) -- find patrons around the museum that are willing to give you some cash. Just don't try to hit up the wrong patrons with your wine glass if you value your cheese....
Or throw your wine over a scion of the Sackler brood…

If those who want try a… different Doom experience should give MyHouse.WAD a try.
After playing that, I went and read House of Leaves (which both MyHouse and the whole Backrooms meme seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from) and... I found it to be a really pretentious novel that I would have absolutely loved when I was ~18 years old.

I'd play it...

So I have no idea about classical music, could someone tell me what song that was? Thanks.
I just wanted to add that the second tune, played during the final score tally (at the 7:28 mark), is the flower duet, from “Lakmé” by Léo Delibes. One of the comments on YouTube misidentifies it as “Scuoti quella fronda di ciliegio”, also known as the “flower duet” from “Madame Butterfly”, by Puccini. While the latter is also very nice, it’s obviously not the one used in this Doom parody. I was glad to discover the duet from Delibes, which I find quite enchanting. Here’s a rendition on YouTube: Duo des fleurs. The duet proper starts 64 seconds into the piece.

So, funny thing: when I came to the comments and saw Alt-X's question, I immediately had the thought, fully formed, "It's either Bach's Minuet in G major or Cello suite 1 in G major." This came to mind without having seen any video or anything.

Then I scrolled to your post, and sure enough, Bach's Cello suite 1 in G major.

This made me stop and ponder, though, just why it was that I jumped to that conclusion, and also why was I correct in my prediction?

Here's my thoughts on it
  1. Those tunes are both undeniably good
  2. They sound just about as stereotypically "Classical" as a piece of music can sound, and will therefore be immediately recognized as appropriate for the venue
  3. They're simple enough that they're accessible to the rather limited tastes of a great deal of people, most especially the kind of person doesn't know anything about classical music, but wants to seem like they do.
So I came to a conclusion that amuses me:
Bach Cello Suite 1 in G is to Art Galleries as Queen's We Are the Champions is to sports arenas.

Odd. I like art (spent a lot of time in museums and some classes).
I like the idea.
But weird to do this as a doom mod. Considering it's neither a FPS nor even using the doom engine, more accurate to call it a weird Doom x Art mashup.

The clever-ish idea would work much much better with a high res, modern engine. Since you're looking at art... You could even see it then.

Saw this earlier and it's really funny but seems like a missed opportunity not making it a WAD?

Sip and stare
Until it is done

The deranged way he holds the wine glass is really just perfect.
Is it really more deranged than holding the glass by the foot, let's say

Also later in the video he gets a can of PBR, that's like nowhere pretentious enough to drink at an art gallery

There was actually an iOS app where you walked around a 3D gallery clicking on pictures on the walls to view them. You could add whatever pictures you wanted, even from your own photos. Can't recall what it was called and I suspect it disappeared long ago. I grabbed it when it went free for a while, but no longer have it. It probably would no longer run anyway.

Edited to add: It's still there and updated for iOS 18! Just called 3D Gallery, and there is a 3D Gallery 2 which is the one I have. At £9.99 each I think they may be a bit dated and limited to justify that price. Doesn't look like features have been updated much over the years if at all.

I was genuinely blown away by how much effort was put into that, especically given that most players will never even see half of the maps. I had to watch a youtube video about it to find all there was, and I've played every Doom to death.

Some very inventive use of the tools went into it as well. A real passion project I think.

Generally speaking the bar for entry to these gallery events is generational wealth, so witty repartee is rather wasted. Simply break wind loudly and they’ll be braying like donkeys in no time.

They ought to lock you up on multiple charges of being preciously clever with intent to offend.
