Giving this another shot after punting on the September one due to the day proving to be awful for everyone, here's the Ars (mostly) monthly SC2 tournament again.

Note the changes in the "Where" section, if you're a veteran and used to how we usually run it.

Signups

Signup sheet is here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlvvLOXWvoObdDlsS3JyODA5d2hUTTExblR5SkVUQnc&hl=en_US

Signups are open pretty much until the day of the tournament, but please sign up when you know you're likely to be able to make it so that I can know how many to expect.

Time & Date

Date: October 22th, 2011
Time: Starts at 3 PM Eastern time (noon Pacific), will probably run 5-6 hours.

Where

Games take place on the Battle.net US server.

In a change from previous tournaments, I'm going to try to run this tourney from the Battle.net "Ars" channel, instead of jumping back and fourth between the IRC channel and the Battle.net tournament. We'll see if I end up regretting this and wishing for a more robust chat client or not.

So, just log into Battle.net and join the "Ars" channel on the day of the tourney. Try to show up 15 minutes early, if possible.

Brackets

Turnout permitting, there will be two brackets: Highbie and Lowbie. Players will be divided into brackets by division; at whatever the middle division is, players will be randomly split between the two brackets to even out the numbers. ("highbie" and "lowbie" may be a formality, depending on turnout- last tournament was almost entirely Platinum in both brackets)

If we have fewer players we may have a single bracket, and if more possibly more brackets.

Rules

We'll be doing a round robin tournament, followed by either finals or semifinals and then finals. Matches may be best-of-1, best-of-3, or best-of-5, depending on the size of the brackets; the exact format each round will be indicated on the pairing spreadsheet.

Progression to the semifinals/finals will be assigned by number of matches won in the round robin rounds. In the event that we have an odd number of players qualifying for the semifinals, a semifinals bye will be given to the player with the highest score entering the semifinals. (ties broken randomly)

The map pool is the current Blizzard rotation of 1v1 ladder maps.

An example of the structure and rules of the tournament, including format (best-of-1 vs best-of-3) and map selection, can be seen here:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...WvoObdEdCcWxFUm1qQ1pSZUlvMkZpTGJEMXc&hl=en_US

(the maps are out-of-date on that spreadsheet, but the formatting of the actual sheet will be the same)

Links to the spreadsheets will be posted in the OP and the tail of this thread when we kick off the tourney.

Tournament Kickoff

When you get to the Battle.net channel, turn the background of your row in the signup spreadsheet green.

At 3 PM East Coast time, I'll look over that sheet to get a final player count, assign players to the brackets, and post links to the brackets here. Then, we'll get going.

Running the Tournament

Once the tournament has started, players play their games freely. Try to play your games in round order, but if your next opponent is busy and a later opponent is available, you may play them instead.

After each game, record the winner and loser of the game in the spreadsheet, with a '1' or '0' in the appropriate cell.

I'll be administering the tournament in the Battle.net "Ars" channel. The tournament should mostly be able to run itself from the spreadsheet once the games get going. I'll also be playing, so if you have any questions and I don't respond, ping me a private Battle.net message and I'll get back to you when my game ends.

Streaming/Casting/Replays

If lorcas manages to make it, there will likely be some streaming and casting of the games at: http://lorcas.org

Regardless of if we have casting, there will probably be replays posted here and in the main Ars SC2 thread during and after the tourney.

Prizes

As a special for this time, there will be prizes in the form of Steam gifts! Four pieces of software will be gifted. If there are two brackets, first place in the highbie bracket gets first pick, followed by first place in the lowbie bracket, followed by runner up in the highbie bracket, followed by runner up in the lowbie bracket. If we have a single bracket, it'll just be the top four players in order of finishing spot.

Our fabulous prizes to choose from are:

Dead Island x2
Bastion
The Polynomial
Section 8: Prejudice
Rock of Ages
Hard Reset

If you get a pick, select an available game and tell me the steam account to send it to and I'll gift it to you. We'll sort it out in chat at the end of the tournament.

Random thought for next time: Since we're mostly platinum, I'll add a "suggested bracket" spot where players can volunteer for the highbie or the lowbie bracket.

Of course, last time I tried the "rate yourself on a scale of 1-10" to accomplish that, we just got jokes in the column, but if it's a binary choice maybe we'll get some info.

Wish I could, but with midterms and the Collegiate StarLeague... I'm tapped out for SC2 time. GLHF!
Who are you playing with?

e: Also, should be good to go on this one.
I'm not good enough to play for the team, but I'm involved in the Columbia University CSL team. Helping organizing, attending events, etc. May start taking over some of the casting from our good players, so they can focus on winning ;)

Tourney over!

It was an all ZvZ finals. tyir took first place in bracket A, with Heartless coming in second. In bracket B, machination took first place and Village took second. I assume we'll have VODs shortly.

Thanks for playing, everyone! It was a lot of fun!

---> Prizes <---

tyir left before I heard what his prize pick was, so all four finalists should send me an OpenForum PM with their top prize picks in order of preference. I'll also need your Steam ID, to know where to send them.

Heh, even being a part of it without playing is a lot of fun. I've become a lot more involved in my clan (PMS|H2O) without being one of the players who regularly attends tourneys, and it's been a ton of fun. Casting in particular is a riot, and I'm sure some of you have seen the VODs of me casting some of our amateur league matches.

Also, grats to tyir and machination!
