AI search engines give incorrect answers at an alarming 60% rate, study says

    Generative Bullshit. And maliciously so.

Journal that published faulty black plastic study removed from science index

I wish I could send the spam emails I receive begging for papers and essays in vague journals with pompous names to Web of Science as a consideration for removal from the index.

On Musk’s X, blocking users doesn’t block them from viewing your posts anymore

I left pretty much on the day he took over. Still a bit angry about the contacts I haven't found back on Mastodon.

Bizarre, nine-day seismic signal caused by epic landslide in Greenland

The last video in the article is highly recommended. Excellent background and visualisations. And this landslide happened 200 km into the fjord, localising the impact in an uninhabited region. We were lucky this time.

CrowdStrike blames testing bugs for security update that took down 8.5M Windows PCs

At least one of the files had all zeros, and there is a trace out there that shows more details. View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCxvyIx922A&t=180s

CrowdStrike blames testing bugs for security update that took down 8.5M Windows PCs

It seems that they still have an unchecked NULL pointer dereference in the main code. Even with the faulty "content configuration update" that code should not crash.

CrowdStrike fixes start at “reboot up to 15 times” and get more complex from there

According to this article a few months ago the CrowdStrike software for Linux also caused issues with an update. It turns out that some supposedly supported linux configurations (Debian, Rocky Linux, and therefore likely Redhat was well) are not part of the testing matrix at CrowdStrike. I find...

Apple integrates ChatGPT into Siri, iOS, and Mac OS

When I wrote that, I had not yet seen this article "ChatGPT is Bullshit". I guess [citation needed] can be crossed off the list.

Apple integrates ChatGPT into Siri, iOS, and Mac OS

I want a single master switch to permanently disable this. Just one toggle in the settings, and if ChatGPT is set to "off" there, then it will never go to that site. I'd rather have no answer than an AI generated one. I really can do without a bullshit generator in my pocket.

Windows Recall demands an extraordinary level of trust that Microsoft hasn’t earned

If you are vulnerable, then someone else will make that choice for you. This feature should not exist, at all. People will get hurt because of the existence of Recall, regardless of implementation details. If the user can use Recall, then the user can also be coerced into showing their history.

Microsoft’s new “Recall” feature will record everything you do on your PC

Cool, so Microsoft now installs a keylogger by default. Strike that: it installs a keylogger on steroids. More seriously, this has repercussions for abuse victims, LGBTQIA+ kids, women, black people, anyone really in a more vulnerable position, whether at home or at work, or from (prejudiced)...

A real-life pod racer, but with pedals: Ars checks out a velomobile

Differs by model. The QuatreVelo (four wheels) is the most stable of them all. The Quest (the full size "old" model) is probably least stable. Some strips can be applied, especially to the Quest to detach the air flow of a crosswind, somewhat increasing stability, according to some (the effect...

A real-life pod racer, but with pedals: Ars checks out a velomobile

In the Netherlands it is no contest, we don't have hills, we have wind. But also in Germany I don't see a lot of these with a "hilltopper". There is a big difference between what you think you need before you start riding, and what you actually need.

A real-life pod racer, but with pedals: Ars checks out a velomobile

Which is one of the reasons you won't find them with electric support. While you can build them with support up to 25 km/h and still have the bikes treated as bicycles (in the EU), anything more powerful will require testing and a lot regulatory hassle to get them admitted. Not worth it for the...

A real-life pod racer, but with pedals: Ars checks out a velomobile

I ride a velomobile as my main transport since 2010. I do not have a driver's license – it probably is helpful that I live in the Netherlands. I'm currently on my second model, currently riding a DF, the model that you can see on the second picture (that is not the Bülk), although that could be...

xz backdoored, if you use homebrew upgrade immediately

In this Linux Kung Fu thread there is a report for this, but this applies to the Mac as well if you use homebrew. Please run brew update; brew upgrade immediately if you have homebrew installed. This will downgrade the xz and the lzma library to a version that is not backdoored. If you have...
