Pludgapalooza: MacOS 15.4, iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, etc, etc.

Automatic software updates, something I keep off, have been enabled on two of my Apple devices so far....

EU will go easy with Apple, Facebook punishment to avoid Trump’s wrath

It's already been said, but appeasement never works, especially when you're dealing with someone like Trump and his Gang of Grifters.

Maybe Trump should go back to calling his missile shield the Iron Dome

I'm sure they can get more funding if they think of the audience. Like a missile defense system to protect Mara Lago. Give Trump his own "Gold Dome"

Devs say AI crawlers dominate traffic, forcing blocks on entire countries

What really has them drooling is the idea that "soon" they'll have the ability to do product placement in real time (on live tv even!) on demand. That's were the real money will be.

Nvidia announces “Rubin Ultra” and “Feynman” AI chips for 2027 and 2028

Is this, finally, the machine that goes Ping! ?

Apple Intelligence, Apple Intelligence, Apple Intelligzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

They must have fixed that. For "Loch Ness Tunnel" I get something about some roller coaster. For "Loch Ness Tunnel History" I get: And also a link to that Facebook page

Apple patches 0-day exploited in “extremely sophisticated attack”

So do I and... as far as I can tell it doesn't support Apple Intelligence either. And I'm not seeing anywhere that it says it is using space for this unsupported feature? How do I see that?

Apple patches 0-day exploited in “extremely sophisticated attack”

Looks like there are also updates for current macOS versions, tvOS, and VisionOS, and Safari. Not just iOS/iPadOS

Is “vibe coding” with AI gnarly or reckless? Maybe some of both.

Vibe-programming? Why does that make me think of Donald Sutherland playing a hippy tank commander in a WWII movie with Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas? "vibe" + "programming" are two concepts that really don't belong together.

Apple announces M3 Ultra—and says not every generation will see an “Ultra” chip

I didn't need my 64GB M1 Ultra. It replaced a 2018 mini and was major overkill for my usage. But I had the opportunity to purchase it when it came out and I expect to get many more years usage out of it.

    Perpetual Random Apple Rants Thread

Time Machine used to work fairly reliably, doing backups early in the morning, for me anyway, but ever since upgrading to Sequoia it only works WHILE I'm actually using my Mac. And that Mac rarely gets turned off. It's always on.

Education tech firm sues Google over AI search summaries

My time as a full time student mostly predates the Internet (Unless you count email & USENet) (Boy I feel really old today!) so the whole idea of a company devoted to "Learning assistance" (aka Cheating!) on the scale of Chegg feels so foreign, but I'm sure there were equivalents back in the...

iOS 18.3.1 update fixes security flaw used in “extremely sophisticated attack”

A “me too” on mixed results for Apple Intelligence being re-enabled. 3 Apple Intelligence capable devices with it turned off, only 1, an M1 MacBook Air, had it re-enabled after the update (and I immediately turned it back off) (stayed off on an M1 Mac Studio and M2 iPad Pro) The update must be...

White House budget proposal could shatter the National Science Foundation

I’m sure some research will happen. For weapons. And to prove the Bible is correct about all sorts of impossible things. The important stuff. /s

Court rules FBI’s warrantless searches violated Fourth Amendment

That 'national security emergency' exception - who decides when that is in effect? Is an Executive Order okay? (I think 'someone' declared one of those this week to send the National Guard to the Mexican border?) Or does it require Congressional action? Or something only the White House...

Trump announces $500B “Stargate” AI infrastructure project with AGI aims

And who is going to pay for the infrastructure (roads, etc) so all of these data centers can be built? And tax breaks/incentives from local/state/federal governments to get one of these behemoths built (thinking they’d get some of those jobs)? And new / refurbished power plants to supply the...

Trump announces $500B “Stargate” AI infrastructure project with AGI aims

So... these potential 100,000 jobs... is this going to be some kind of low paying "call center" style thing for people who get to "babysit" things like chatGPT, CoPilot, etc. to make sure the "correct" answers are given ("Hallucination Feedback") ? Or do they think they're going to build enough...

Supreme Court rules TikTok can be banned

Where did this "magic algorithm" come from anyway (assuming it's actually something special)? Some mathematician deep in the bowels of TikTok? Some "foreign" funded military program? Some US University's federally funded project? If it's such a marvelous propaganda "weapon" why can't some US...

Google increases Workspace plan base prices while adding Gemini features

Ugh! I guess I'll finally have to stop procrastinating and move my 10 users off of the Business Starter and somewhere else. But I'm currently only paying $7.20/user (Originally free, then $3, then $6 and now $7.20), not whatever is mentioned in the article.... and I'm not seeing anything in my...

Should I migrate from iTunes to Apple TV & Apple Music?

Apparently you can also find out where the Books app puts things from Terminal defaults find booklibrarypath Not sure what would happen if you tried to change that... And here's a Python library that claims (I haven't used it, I don't know much python (yet)) to allow you to do assorted...
