Gaming thoughts, bite-size chewables - new orange flavor!

I adore the Myst games and the novels were impactful on me as a young adult as well. But I really like the puzzles to be compartmentalized like Myst and Myst III: Exile instead of the one big world of Riven. That game just didn't really click for me ever and when I eventually figured out the...

Not to disparage Voracious Games, but "composed mostly of veterans from AAA studios" is a pretty low bar these days with how quickly the big studios churn and burn their staff. Voracious Games has a lot of ties to Shiver Entertainment which I think is used as a "partner studio" to help balance...

Any recommendations for an easy-going, casual open-world game?

Which reminds me, Red Faction: Guerrilla might be a fun open world game for you to try. The ReMarsteredversion came out in 2018, but I mostly have fond memories of the original. No idea how well the remake has aged, but it's a "GTA on Mars" game that makes you real uncomfortably appreciative...

Well Wild West Dynasty isn't released yet, but it's pretty much as you described. It could be good if they learn a lot from Medieval Dynasty and improve the formula. If it's just a reskin, then prepare to be whelmed. Maybe it'll click for you? But for me it's just not quite polished enough...

My life has a perpetual slot for "brain off, podcast on, maybe whiskey, just relax" gaming. During the daytime that's usually filled by various house chores, but at night the Simulators come out to play. Power Wash Simulator was pretty fantastic. The new Construction Simulator is my jam now...

    Who are your gaming heroes?

I dunno, I spent more time watching than playing as a kid. Between siblings, cousins, and friends - I had to GetGood™ to avoid having to hand the controller off to the next person. There are certain varieties of games that I think are better watched via streamer than played, particularly...

Any recommendations for an easy-going, casual open-world game?

I have no idea how well they've aged, but Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint both offer a large open world where you can just wander around and do Spec Ops stuff. There's some difficulty and you may need to do a more tactical approach at times - but not dissimilar to using a more...

FFXIV is pretty interesting in the larger picture of MMOs. It's a pretty "vanilla" MMO, but it does those fundamental things really well. And then perhaps most importantly they've managed to last for many years without fucking it up. That's the really hard part - given enough time, most online...

You're overlooking FFXIV at #10 (and Destiny2 at #31 depending on how picky you are with genre definitions). The social aspects, persistent world, and character spec pieces of classic MMORPG design have all bled into tons of other genres in the last decade, so I'm not surprised that the classic...

Ars Co-op Gaming Night Revival - Saturdays @ 9pm EST

a new Construction Simulator is out as the sequel to Construction Simulator 2015. The new version is mostly just a huge coat of paint on the old one and apart from maybe some new machines I can't really pick out any big new features. It still suffers from a lot of the usual "simulator jank"...

It's about half folk songs and classical and the other half is weird stuff to get more variety... and at least one mutant hybrid "Eine Kleine Nachtmuzik" (Trap Mix)". It's something like two-dozen songs in total right now and they've announced plans to add more songs (free) along with a bunch...

Anyone playing Trombone Champ? It's super dumb... but I really like it. It's almost all novelty over actual game substance, but I've got something like 2 hours of gameplay in it now and it's building towards some final boss thing? So I guess I'll keep playing until I'm The Trombone Champ...

I think the part I personally agree with is that Business compromises Art (not at all unique to games). I don't think the "As a Service" is what causes the compromise as much as the need to structure the game around generating a constant income stream. That's really a feature of capitalism...

My Switch is docked 95% of the time, but if the TV is busy doing something else, I'll use a tablet stand to hold the screen at eye height and keep my hands on a controller in my lap. Not as portable, but way more ergonomic for me.

Hades's "god mode" was a wonderful change to the formula for my playstyle as well. I want to progress the game consistently, but I'm not patient enough to 'get good' when I hit a wall. God Mode gives you 20% damage resistance and increases by 2% each time you die without finishing a run up to...

Ars Co-op Gaming Night Revival - Saturdays @ 9pm EST

I did a full clear of Conan Exile's original map with a buddy in the dark times of Summer 2020. It took us something like 120 hours all-up? I really enjoyed the game and am looking forward to checking out the new Sorcery stuff, but it really needs more time than what Saturday Co-op usually...

I like CoH2, but the AI is in a very weird place. They're absolutely awful at making good tactical decisions and you can very easily win any engagements that you're focused on... but the AI can be everywhere at once, so you'll be perpetually pressured on your flanks. I wasn't into the game...

It's weird to see Total War games in the same speed-soup of RTS games. Generally, the TW games punish micromanagement as your units tend to shift formation when you give a command and are temporarily slower and more vulnerable. It's huge problem is just in being able to see and understand...

I feel like we've seen this pattern before and the real answer is "we're working on an acquisition but because we're publicly traded we're legally not allowed to tell you about it until the formal announcement". Maybe it's not happening, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see it pop up in the...

TW:WH2 is one of my most-played games on Steam and with WH3's Immortal Empires released, I suspect it'll get up there too... that said I think I've had a tougher time in WH3 than I did in WH2. Because of the size of the map or how the factions are spread out, it's hard to have any safe borders...
