    Western Digital/Sandisk SSD: never again

Late to the pitchforks....but hell yes. Samsung fridge, broke 3 times, once almost every year. Bad sensor, about $100 to replace. When it dies forever, I will store food in hole in the ground with ice before ever buying Samsung again. Samsung washer (top loader), broke under warranty the...

My keyboard needs are simple but not being met by the market.

Dumb question, but do you game? A hall effect board literally changed my gaming. I have the madlion 68R and could never go back to traditional switches. Being able to set the actuation point and release is a game changer. Rapid trigger is over rated. Not sure how many 106 key HE boards are out...

CrowdStrike blames testing bugs for security update that took down 8.5M Windows PCs

100% this. Dave is great at put this into terms a non-dev op can understand. How this was not tested on live systems just blows my mind. Does that mean the end users are the test systems? Hopefully they get sued into oblivion.

Sophisticated $25M ethereum heist took about 12 seconds, DOJ says

It never really said how there were caught other than they followed the money. It sounds like no one caught them from their methods, and how could they if that sophisticated. It seems like they brute forced it by seeing where the money went and maybe found people of interest. If they really did...

    What happen to 5.25" bays?

It's funny how Larry Ellison nailed it decades before the optical drive died. I remember watching Triumph of the Nerds where he said everyone was nuts to put stuff on media, ship that to a store, buy it then take it home. Not that I like him, but quite a visionary. That show aired in 1996.

280 million e-bikes are slashing oil demand far more than electric vehicles

In Asia, specifically SEA, we use motorbikes for literally everything. Almost every house owns one and for people with no car, it is the primary mode of transportation. I sold my car years ago and use a motorbike for everything. Much cheaper to maintain, better mpg, and a LOT Faster to get...

Revamped per-app volume mixer and other features in latest Windows 11 preview

The app specific volume level has been there for a long while, you just had to dig under advanced settings. I think it's a horrible idea to hide something like Chrome volume as normal end users have no clue to change it when the main volume is set to 100% yet Chrome is low volume.

The Ars Technica 2021 holiday gift guide: Procrastinator’s edition

I've had 5 Anker power banks and had to return 2 of them. Not good odds. Aukey is a better brand IMHO. The PB-WL03 is smaller, better designed, and lighter than the same 20,000mAh Anker product. It also has a LED numerical display for charge.

100Mbps uploads and downloads should be US broadband standard, senators say

This very conversation is a fucking joke. I live in SE Asia and have 1000/500Mbps fiber for ~$21. This is from a country that pretty much fucks everything up, but yet you guys are fighting over 25/3. Telecoms are full of shit if they say they can't provide the infrastructure. Stop thinking...

Trying to figure out which policies control the pandemic best

Laughs in Thai I live in a 3rd world country run by a junta and idiots, yet we are ranked #1 by the WHO for covid effectiveness. 1. close all borders 2. close all shops but hospitals, gas stations, banks, and grocery stores 3. 100% mandatory mask wearing 4. mandatory distancing, even in...

Don’t risk your health to see Tenet, which is uber-fun but still just a movie

AT&T fights for slower Internet speeds in FCC’s rural-broadband program

America is a joke. I pay ~$40 for 500Mb fiber in my house in Thailand. When I visited my mom so was paying like $50 a month for 26Mb. What a fucking rip off. So you are telling me some 3rd world country can run a far more advanced fiber setup than the US can.

Ad Astra: A journey upriver to meet your demons, internal and otherwise

It was a shit movie, don't waste your time. For starters, they tried an Apocalypse Now narrative, and it failed. There was no depth or connection between Pitt and his dad, none. There was also no connection or depth between Pitt and his wife, none. She literally just walked in the last...
