Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 review: No, it’s not “4090 performance at $549”

I sincerely hope AMD pulls it off this gen. I wasn't planning on keeping my 3080 FE for 6+ years, but that's looking increasingly likely otherwise.

Windows 11 24H2, the biggest update in two years, starts rolling out today

I’m saddened that 24H2 will render my Samsung Odyssey+ VR headset unusable, even in SteamVR. Microsoft removed WMR support. I’ll stick with 23H2 until support runs out, then dual boot I suppose.

Tesla Full Self Driving requires human intervention every 13 miles

As someone who tried FSD 12.3.x on a free trial a few months ago, 13 miles is wildly optimistic for city driving. It’s absolutely nowhere close to being any shade of ready.

AnandTech, mainstay of computer hardware reviews, closes after 27 years

I’ve been an Anandtech reader for 23 years. This is truly a sad loss, but not a surprising one. It’s been clear for some time now that their readership’s been on a downswing. I’m glad Ars is still around.

Ryzen speed boosts get backported to Windows 11 23H2 with optional update

I had no idea this was happening. At some point I’ll have to dual boot to keep using my Samsung Odyssey+. Deeply disappointing.

Elon Musk’s X finally allows users to request fact-checks on misleading posts

A step in the right direction, but it’s not enough. I gave up on Twitter because I found myself marking ~80% of my feed as irrelevant. The abhorrent content that was flooding my feed simply couldn’t be stopped. Blocking the 2-5 obvious bots that followed me each and every day was also getting old.

Dirty diaper resold on Amazon ruined a family business, report says

I agree that Amazon doesn’t check returns. I occasionally buy those returns via Warehouse Deals, and even “like new” often arrives broken/missing parts/completely wrong product in the box. Extending that to diapers labeled as new is next level awful.

CenturyLink left customers without Internet for 39 days—until Ars stepped in

I’m not surprised in the slightest. I had CenturyLink gigabit fiber for two months before I switched back to Comcast. It’s that bad.

Tesla finally brings the refreshed 2024 Model 3 to North America

If our family needed a second car, an EV with 80 mile real world range would be more than plenty. The base Model 3 is massive overkill for that application. Otherwise, our Model Y LR does everything we need it to. I know a family of four whose only car is a Model 3 SR+. It works decently well...

AMD releases even more Ryzen 5000 CPUs, keeps its last-gen AM4 platform alive

I upgraded from an 8700k to a 5800X3D over a year ago. I expected a bump in gaming performance, but was blown away by the improvement in real world smoothness (1% lows) in games. I’m happy to see the introduction of a more affordable variant of this amazing CPU.

Mazda not ready to bet on EVs but says more plug-ins for the US market

It’s disappointing that Mazda doesn’t have plans to make a compact EV. We loved our two Mazda3s while we had them. A Mazda3 EV would be perfect for us even if they could only give it a smallish battery.

Why don’t EVs have standard diagnostic ports—and when will that change?

I don’t think anyone would be surprised that Tesla did their own thing here. Our Model Y just has an Ethernet connection where an OBDII port would normally be found. Edit: It’s not RJ45 as I originally posted, but a 5 pin connector with similar size and shape. You need an adapter cable to break...

Car dealers say they can’t sell EVs, tell Biden to slow their rollout

I’ve seen one out in the wild with normal plates, so that’s at least one sale made somewhere.

Car dealers say they can’t sell EVs, tell Biden to slow their rollout

I’m a bit surprised to see the dealers that aren’t on that list. I thought for sure the Chevy dealer that made a Bolt test drive as unpleasant as possible would’ve signed. Actually, no dealer I’ve ever purchased from signed. Notably, the Subaru side of one such dealer is on the list, but not...

Comcast should stop advertising slower speeds as “10G,” industry group says

Can confirm, I've had both. Mediacom is strictly worse than Comcast. Support, service calls, network speeds and quality. All of it.

Comcast should stop advertising slower speeds as “10G,” industry group says

Good luck! I was so thoroughly displeased with Quantum Fiber that I went back to Comcast.

22-year-old Firefox tooltip bug fixed in a few lines, offering hope to us all

I somehow manage to hit this bug at least once a week. I’m thrilled that it’s finally fixed. No more random tooltips floating around in front of whatever I’m trying to look at.

Report: Apple’s next iPhone SE will be the one to retire the iPhone 6 design

I have a 14 Pro, but every time I pick up my old 8 I’m amazed at how much smaller and lighter it is. I’d trade the 14 Pro in for an equivalent device sized like the 8 any day.

Intel confirms Thunderbolt 5 name, 120Gbps tech arrives in 2024

USB 4… version 2? How have they managed to make their numbering scheme even more confusing?

Google Nest Cameras get a 25%-33% subscription price hike

I’m glad we dumped our two Nest doorbells. They were unreliable, with the cloud often failing to fetch recorded video in a timely manner and serious delays of up to 10 minutes for doorbell notifications on Halloween. They want to charge more for their broken service? No thanks!
