Perplexity will come to Moto phones after exec testified Google blocked access

Given the preinstalled software nightmare stories I've heard about Motorola, which also includes new software being installed later on after the initial purchase that you can't override, this...well, I can't say it surprises me, certainly. It definitely doesn't make me want to spend money on a Motorola phone, though.

I'm confused...

How is this a win? AI is STILL being forced on users. The only difference I see is who gets the money for the user's use.

Yes, that's a thing among corporations who will fight to the death for their right to exclusively milk people's life savings until it's dry, but I digress...

I mean, if the user wants it, sure, let them get it. But MAKING people have it (and can you get rid of it once they've burned your free data allotment forcing it on you?) even if they don't want it seems pretty fucking arrogant.

I'm so fucking tired of companies telling us what we want, and forcing it on us.

Every Android phone manufacturer except Google reminds me of the bad old days of Windows, where they'd install alternate shells and piles of crapware. Google's getting worse themselves by building in AI stuff that I don't want and can't be removed, but at least it's only theirs and not multiple others that they got paid to install. Of course Apple's doing the same thing, so there is no escape without a de-Googled Android build, but I am too old and rely on my phone too much at this point to deal with the complications that those bring. It's been a long time since I was installing custom ROMs on my Motorola Droid.

Vendor exclusivity contracts should either be heavily regulated or banned IMO.

Would be nice to have a phone that is AI free, but flip phones are hard to come by these days.
They actually aren’t! I have 2 aunts that buy them when old ones wear out. They asked the sales person if they had any, and they did. I don’t know the models sadly since they live 12 hours away.

I am so glad that my only touch point on the Google ecosystem is a small number of GMail accounts which I only use via Thunderbird, and of course Youtube, which I use only in a separate browser or at least separate Firefox container tab. (plug for the Container Tabs extension, I love it) Youtube's recommendations are not a thing I have paid attention to in years, and it's not pushing Gemini in my face yet, so thus far I've not had Gemini pushed on me at all...yet.

I have an iphone but it's an SE 3rd gen, which doesn't support "Apple Intelligence". From what I gather tho, Apple's approach is somewhat less... obnoxious. I haven't really experienced it though, so I can't be sure.

I had a Motorola G Pure previously. It had an interesting habit of deleting files because...honestly I have no fucking clue. Stuck a 128G microSD card into it...loaded it with tunes...and a week later, tunes gone. Over and over I would load music on to this thing, only for it to disappear 7 days later.
I have been a less than enthusiastic supporter of Google's recent Android versions file management choices since.

The trial was never about AI, what are you on about?

Also, no one is "forcing" AI on you. You're free to just... not use it.

So how many different "AIs" do these new Motos come with now? Perplexity, Copilot, Llama, presumably Gemini as well? Maybe they should list which "AIs" they aren't trying to shove down my throat.

And, ideally, set them all to off by default. (Yes, I know - I can dream..)

Failing that, a single setting where you can indicate that you don't want no steenking 'AI'

Currently still running a Pixel 5 with an outdated android build with every bit of google that I can disable, disabled. I'll be keeping this phone as long as I can get away with (probably not all that much longer unfortunately as it's on android 14 and no longer receives security updates). Hopefully long enough at least that it can outlast this push for AI that few actually want.

So don't buy what they're selling? Sounds pretty simple to me.

I know they are available, but not as ubiquitous as they used to be.

I wish they were like PCs- buy and throw whatever you want on.

I guess at least there are some options Android wise- CalyxOS, GrapheneOS, iodeOS, /e/OS, etc.

For other OSs there is at least FuriOS, postmarket, Sailfish. Maybe some others I'm forgetting but...still a long way to go sadly.
